Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T) is The Boeing Company’s Research & Technology division developing advanced cutting-edge technologies for a wide variety of products and services, with presence in various locations around the world.  BR&T-India based in Bangalore (India) is an integral part of BR&T and is engaged in the development of advanced aerospace technologies. Besides doing in-house research, BR&T-India also teams up with partners in Academic Institutions, Government Laboratories and Private Enterprises across India on collaborative research.

The Applied Mathematics team within BR&T-India is focused on creating and applying mathematics and engineering analysis methods and tools for cost reduction, cycle time reduction and quality enhancement of Boeing products and processes. We develop, integrate and transition advanced mathematics-based methods and tools. Our highly capable engineers excel in a team environment of challenge and opportunity on multiple projects to rapidly mature key technologies to production readiness.

The Boeing Research & Technology Centre in Bangalore, India has an immediate opening for a full-time position for a qualified Lead Applied Mathematician to lead the development of a variety of optimization-based methods and tools. Experience as a team lead working on the development of optimization-based methods, tools and techniques is required. A PhD in Applied Mathematics or Operations Research with 8-10 years of experience is required.

The selected candidate must be capable of refining and validating problem specifications and formulating problems in mathematical terms. The candidate must be capable of developing complex algorithms and evaluating resources to solve mathematical problems. The candidate must contribute to the development of proposals pertaining to problems of relevance to the business units in the company. The candidate must assist in forecasting future mathematical needs and capabilities, and must be capable of designing, coding, testing, and maintaining mathematical software tools.

This position will be in the Boeing Research and Technology Center, Bangalore, India, and reports to Sr. Manager of Integrated Vehicle Systems.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Conduct R&D in support of Boeing technology needs that may include collaboration with academia & industry partners.
  • Apply knowledge / understanding and previous experience in applied mathematics to develop optimization methods and tools of relevance to the company business units.
  • Lead the development, refinement, transitioning and maintenance of software tools developed as a part of the applied mathematics activity. Be responsible for software architecture, high/low level design and overall software development for optimization related activities.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the management.
  • Work closely with teams of engineers located in India and in the US.  Develop and maintain relationships / partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, and partners to develop collaborative plans and execute on projects.
  • Forecast future mathematical needs and capabilities and keep track of trends in optimization and related areas. Contribute to the development of proposals that address business unit needs in Applied Mathematics.
  • This position may require occasional travel within India and internationally.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Education typically acquired through advanced education (PhD) and typically 8 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g. Masters +11 years' related work experience) is a basic requirement
  • At least 8 years of experience as an Applied Mathematician
  • 3+ years of experience as a Lead in Applied Mathematics
  • Experience using or applying metrics to measure performance against projects to ensure high quality delivery.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • PhD in Applied Math or equivalent
