Job Description

The Design Release Engineer is responsible for releasing parts and subsystems for production. This individual will also lead in gathering, negotiating, updating, and documenting requirements for the assigned product and will be the single-point contact between GM and the supplier. The DRE will participate in highly complex problems using quantitative and qualitative data to find solutions with a blend of program management and technical leadership. They will also be responsible to lead and develop strategic solutions to achieve business initiatives for safety, warranty cost and quality. This posting is within the Vehicle Motion Embedded Controls (VMEC) – Chassis Electronics group and includes: Modules & Software

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report onsite at the  GM Global Technical Center - Cole Engineering Center Podium,  three times per week minimum or other frequency dictated by the business.

Responsibilities:

  • Address all controller and system safety concerns promptly
  • Own/Release the hardware for development & production
  • Negotiate changes from supplier, Electrical Architecture, Controls, Software and Cyber Security Engineers and update controller requirement documents
  • Support cost savings initiatives
  • Facilitate requirements and design reviews with suppliers, algorithm and software groups (DFMEA, DRBFM, Peer Reviews)
  • Gather all vital documents for sourcing and provide technical expertise during purchasing process
  • Organizes and leads key Controller Product Development Team (PDT) meetings.
  • Keep supplier(s) on track to meet key milestones (design freeze, gate reviews for prototype levels, validation start and complete dates)
  • Review and approve controller validation plans—Worst Case Analysis, Bench (Design Demo), Design and Process Validation
  • Ensures hardware prototypes are validated and available for key pre-production vehicle build events: (IVER, APPV, PPV, etc.)
  • Releases Base Model Part Number (hardware) and PPAP approval
  • Lead/participate in issue resolution for the assigned product
  • Controller warranty analysis, issue resolution, parts restriction and report updates as required to team leadership/CPIT
  • Supplier and Vehicle Assembly plant visits as required
  • Monitor design changes in production (via Change Notices)
  • Support annual validation requirements

Additional Job Description

Minimum Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or Computer Science
  • Minimum 3+ years of automotive experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency comprehending software/hardware requirements
  • Must be capable of providing component specific direction to new engineers and supplier resident engineers
  • High level knowledge of software verification/validation processes
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult
  • High level of oral and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others
  • This position requires legally operating a motor vehicle on a daily basis
  • DFSS Green Belt Certified

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Master's degree in one of the following areas: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or Computer Science
  • Minimum 5+ years of DRE experience
  • Experience in the GM product release and specification process
  • Experience with customer interface technologies
  • In-depth knowledge of vehicle serial data communications (i.e. CAN, GMLAN, & LIN)
  • Knowledge of vehicle dynamics and electronic chassis systems
  • Knowledge of SAFe Agile Release process including PI/ART/SCRUMS
  • DFSS Blackbelt Certified

Compensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington

  • Compensation: The expected base compensation for this role is: $93,400 - $149,200 Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
