Manufacturing Development - Automation Engineer

The Manufacturing Development - Automation Engineer will be part of a small team who will focus primarily on the design and delivery of prototype equipment and processes for the TPMS product group as well as key machine delivery projects which cannot be assigned to the external supply base.

General Responsibilities
• Key participant in the development of new production processes and/or adapt existing production processes for assembly, calibration and testing
• Define specifications for production equipment and interact with mechanization (in house) and/or equipment suppliers to ensure equipment will meet specifications
• Key participant in global new product development project teams to enable successful launch of new products
• Collaborate with other departments on process specifications, quality aspects, product specifications and continuity of equipment
• Influence product designs during new product development phase to ensure economical and defect free manufacture
• Developing new or improved manufacturing and testing processes that are necessary to achieve the performance and cost requirements of future device applications
• Organize the arranging of sample lines and process development equipment
• Key participant in advanced quality planning activities
• Coordinates all functional requirements, the reviewing of designs and debugging /qualifying new high volume assembly /test equipment or tooling
• Transferring knowledge to make site personnel
• Support improvement projects to reduce cycle time, defects and manufacturing costs
• Work with suppliers and contract manufacturers to ensure processes are capable, have sufficient controls in place, can meet out delivery requirements, and meet our cost targets
• Evaluate technical capabilities including tooling design, build experience, maintenance program, processes and process controls, cell automation- if required, quality control systems, and material knowledge 

Experience / Qualifications

• A university degree required (i.e. Bachelors degree) or equivalent relevant work experience

• Strong interpersonal & collaboration skills to work effectively with all levels of the organization including suppliers and/or external customers

Role Specific Responsibilities:

  • Support research into next generation technologies to ensure Sensata’s ability to meet customer expectations and obtain the quality and cost benefits from any improvements in automation technology
  • Liaise with external equipment and process suppliers for the delivery of fixtures/components but also to understand next generation technologies and impending obsolescence issues
  • Support the delivery of cost estimates and the management of schedules for internally delivered processes, fixtures and equipment
  • Work alongside the Manufacturing Development Automation Team Leader and the Process Development and Design Engineering teams to identify gaps in prototype capability and propose solutions to support current and future development programs
  • Support training of PDE team in the use of prototype equipment and ongoing process and equipment support incl. fixture design, documentation, maintenance, troubleshooting etc
  • Document & support any equipment or projects transferred to make-site production teams

Essential Criteria:

  • Knowledge of PLC programming to IEC 61131 standards (Any platform but Beckhoff TwinCAT is preferred)
  • Good understanding of electrical control and power distribution systems and ability to fault find these systems
  • Good understanding of machine safety systems and safety legislation to ISO 13849 or IEC 62061 standards
  • Experience with robotics systems (SCARA, 6 axis, Cartesian).  Programming knowledge not essential but is an advantage

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of the electrical design of power distribution, safety and control systems
  • Some knowledge of PC application programming for user interface and traceability purposes.  Experience in one of the .NET Framework languages preferred

Please note that occasional travel will be required for equipment installation and support
