System Architect SW & Electronics Core System

Let's create the future together

At Volvo Cars, we believe that being curious and truly committed to understanding people is the key to future success. We are people who care about other people, working together to create new technologies and innovations for safe, sustainable and convenient mobility. Want to join us?

We envision that our friends, families and children are transported in a personal, sustainable, and safe way. To reach this, we build a self-driving, fully electric, connected and super safe Volvo Car. The amount of software in our future vehicles is by far exceeding many other software critical products and businesses. We tend to see the future cars as a computer, a “Core System”, on wheels. To orchestrate such a huge software-centric system, we need a computer that is powerful enough to carry all features from control loops to AI/Machine Learning capabilities.

We need a software architecture that enables us to utilize the hardware and to support a fast-moving organization and development. In addition, we are in a transformation with our products and our company to become more of a software-driven company. Our strategic and operational work on our SW & Electronics Core System plays an important role in enabling this transformation. In this quest of pushing the boundaries we need people with competence and knowhow within development of complex Software and Embedded System.
About us - SW & Electronics Core System (ART SWECS)
In the execution of our development strategy, there is a need of a focus on balancing and securing the system characteristics for the Core System with all applications (i.e. “SW-on-HW Core System”). The distributed way of working will stress the need of centralized guidance and quality assurance.
This centralized guidance is hosted and driven from SW & Electronics Core System (ART SWECS) with the main tasks of:
• Set, guide, drive and guard the coherence to the Strategies & Architecture ensuring the Core System quality and performance.
• Manage and balance shared Core System resources.
• Ensure integration, test, trouble shooting and optimization for the shared Core System resources.
• Run release- and life cycle management.

To support this, the structural/organizational setup will initially have 3 types of teams. One in each of the areas Architecture, Integration and Release, each led by one PO and coached by a Scrum master. The manning of those teams is handled by a Team Manager.
What you’ll do
You will be a part of a team using agile way of working and SAFe methodology, managing the shared resource of the Core System resources (memory, CPU, wake-up-times, etc.) You will guide, drive and guard the systemization of the “SW-on-HW Core System” (Platform + all Apps) by defining the architecture, providing Core specific requirements and framework with principles and patterns of design (also WoW). You will work with nursing and optimizing the core system product, defining and monitor KPIs for measurement of trends and characteristics with the responsibility to manage quality indicators and handle technical debt by initiate/motivate refactoring when needed. All with the purpose to optimize the performance of the product.
You and your skills
You have a M. Sc in Electrical or Software Engineering or similar relevant experience. Relevant experience of designing and/or defining Software architecture, principles and patterns of Embedded systems. You have a genuine interest of the technical areas related to Software- and Electronics Architecture. You communicate clearly and concisely, in written and spoken English.

You have your routs within Software Design with the knowhow and will to define and break down strategies into patterns or detailed requirement, to facilitating planning, tracking, scheduling implementations/deliverables and to develop working relationships with the development organization, teams and software engineers and others.
Meritorious:
A strong technical background in Embedded Linux, QNX, general POSIX and excellent IT skills. Experienced in coding, object-oriented design, design patterns and an ability to develop a unified vision for software characteristics and functions. Experience from working with platform features, of full software development lifecycle, problem definition, design, development and release.
