Vulnerable Road User Engineer - Pedestrian Protection

Job Description

Hybrid:

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren Technical Center three times per week, at minimum or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role: You will be responsible for performing structural analysis and human body model interaction on assigned projects at the Vulnerable Road Users (VRU) subsystem level and Vehicle system level.  You will use Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and other analysis methods to assess performance and to lead designs.  You will be creating and documenting modeling plans, as well as initiating development of new processes and tools. 

What You'll Do:

  • Integrate vulnerable road user requirements into vehicle styling and packaging through the vehicle development process. 

  • Lead advanced engineering projects by demonstrating initiative, creativity, independent judgment, and project management throughout development process. 

  • Use advanced synthesis tools to rapidly identify design strategies and help lead the design performance & select design options 

  • Use, or manage the use of, virtual design (CAD) and development tools (CAE) to lead vehicle programs while assisting in vehicle performance requirements balance including global safety requirements. 

  • Possess firsthand knowledge and personal capability to manage resources to conduct CAE simulations to evaluate vulnerable road user requirements for legal and consumer metric load cases. 

  • Perform simulations using LS-DYNA to evaluate vulnerable road user requirements for legal and consumer metric load cases. 

  • Understand and apply GM vulnerable road users CAE standard work procedures for delivering quality models and simulation results. 

  • Generate sound, timely technical solutions to meet vulnerable road user performance targets as documented in the Vehicle Technical Specifications (VTS) for each program.  Balance these solutions with other performance requirements. 

  • Capable of effectively producing design alternatives while working with product engineering, program teams, styling, suppliers, manufacturing, and others to implement changes to meet performance requirements. 

  • Lead design optimization studies using CAE, DOE/DFSS and physical testing to achieve performance requirements while realizing imperative objectives. 

  • Use advanced CAE tools and methods to optimize vulnerable road user solutions for styling, packaging, and performance.  Provide regular feedback through regional and global forums on technical results. 

  • Coordinate and lead physical development and validation at the assigned test facility, typically the Milford Proving Grounds.  Interpret results, provide direction, and guide CAE to test correlation activities. 

  • Work with people globally in a collaborative environment. 

  • Strengthen cross functional workflow between all Vulnerable Road Users (VRU) stakeholders. 

  • Produce and present concise project status updates and management summaries as required outs that meet the needs of managers, Directors, Chief Engineers and Senior Leaders 

  • Work with colleagues around the world in global and collaborative environment. 

  • Participate in RLM and ATW projects to improve simulation capability

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an (ABET) accredited University is required:  Mechanical, Aero, Civil, Materials, Applied Physics 

  • 5+ years of demonstrated proficiency with CAE engineering or related experience (DRE, validation, lab) 

  • Working knowledge of Unigraphics, TeamCenter, and VisMockup preferred 

  • Working knowledge of CAE with experience in LS-DYNA, Primer, Metapost, HyperWorks, ANSA, and CORA preferred but training available 

  • Working knowledge of vulnerable road user CAE simulation analysis preferred 

  • Knowledge of vulnerable road user requirements (legal/GTR and global consumer metric/NCAP) 

  • Working knowledge of GM Global Vehicle Development Process (GVDP) preferred 

  • Working knowledge of performance integration, component manufacturing, and vehicle assembly 

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with regional and global partners 

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others 

  • High level of analytic ability to solve challenging problems and to integrate complex systems 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and performance integration related applications 

  • Ability to integrate complex vehicle systems 

  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes 

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Master's Degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering preferred

  • Demonstrated proficiency in LS-DYNA, ANSA, PRIMER, ANIMATOR, HYPERWORKS and other CAE tools
