Collins Aerospace, a Raytheon Technologies company, is seeking a Principal Systems Engineer to join our Burnsville, MN  Avionics Aftermarket Certification Engineering team. We are looking for a motivated individual to lead Supplemental Type Certification (STC) projects in support of multiple department’s certification, process, and bid/pursuit activities.  The ideal candidate must have proven experience in certifying avionics appliance and avionics systems on commercial aircraft. 

You will act as the technical certification interface both internally and externally for the projects you lead.  The successful candidate will be a leader with excellent communications skills to effectively collaborate with external airline customers, FAA, Foreign Certification Authorities, Supply Chain, Quality, and other Engineering disciplines.  This position is located at the Burnsville, Mn. Collins Aerospace facility and will report to the Cedar Rapids, Ia. Certification and Airworthiness Department.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Generate STC design data packages
  • Requires ability to interpret existing aircraft design and develop electrical, mechanical, and functional interfaces and modifications to safely install and gain FAA approval of Collins Aerospace aftermarket systems
  • Generate manufacturing drawings
  • Proficiency with CAD tools (Microsoft Visio, AutoCAD, Creo) preferred
  • Generate aircraft documentation including Weight and Balance, Electrical Load Analysis, and Instructions for Continued Airworthiness
  • Generate compliance and substantiation documents for STC projects
  • Support First of Type Installations at domestic and international customer locations
    • Support cross-functional team development which include customer stakeholders and subsystem engineers
    • Communicate engineering design solutions both orally and written with customers, other engineers, and leadership
  • Evaluation of aircraft equipment BOM to ascertain applicable qualification/certification requirements
    • Creation of similarity analysis and associated reports

Qualifications/Experience Needed:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience 
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience leading and supporting certification of avionic systems and appliances installations
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM)
  • 6+ Years of relevant experience in engineering certification
  • 8+ Years of professional engineering experience Knowledge of Aircraft avionics systems, wiring, design, troubleshooting, and testing
  • Experience with aircraft avionics installations, OEM (Boeing, Airbus) standard wiring practices and STCs
  • Working knowledge of the STC process
  • Experience working on air transport aircraft
  • Proven experience leading and coordinating across multiple functions and/or engineering disciplines
  • Leadership of small technical teams, including technical oversight and direction, cost estimation, tracking & reporting, coordination, and preparation of detailed technical team reports
  • Ability to understand and interpret contract requirements, program schedule, and cost data
  • Excellent communication skills including report writing and presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a collaborative team environment, while motivating the team to execute the program schedule
  • Working knowledge in Aerospace grade systems / component, testing, certification & qualification

  • Travel up to 15%
