Job Summary:
Pratt & Whitney Hot Section Engineering Support to Operations (HSE ESTO) is seeking a goal oriented, detail-focused Design Engineer to work for our Airfoil Design Team based in Asheville, NC. You will work closely with operations, quality, procurement, and engineering discipline subject matter experts (SMEs) to drive root cause investigations, develop associated corrective actions, and implement product and process improvements. You will prepare and present status and technical content to management and stakeholders.
This position provides an opportunity for visibility within both the product design and manufacturing leadership teams by being technical point of contact for all aspects of qualifying, delivering, and stabilizing product delivery of airfoils. In this role you will be involved with various production support activities related to military and commercial airfoils – acting as subject matter expert (SME). You will be heading multi-disciplinary teams including employees from operations, quality, procurement, and engineering discipline SMEs to drive root cause investigations, develop associated corrective actions, and implement product and process improvements.
You will be navigating Cost of Poor-Quality initiatives and producibility improvement tasks while continuing to question current process and procedures to identify areas for improvement. You will also develop Class II engineering change packages to improve quality, cost and producibility metrics, mentor junior engineers on blade & vane design and communicate & educate peers in operations, manufacturing engineering and quality on part functionality
Key Responsibilities:
- Establish best practices for defect assessment and defining “Right-size Analysis” through risk-based decision-making process.
- Address time critical quality issues to support engine and module delivery.
- Support engineering related efforts to meet shop and supplier MRP requirements.
- Incorporate Pro-Cert methodology and data motivated decision making manufacturing processes. Identify areas of waste within production support process.
- Lead efforts to eliminate repeat examination through proactively addressing repeat QNs. Capture ESTO producibility lessons learned. Drive continuous improvement into product development cycle and design of next generation hardware.
- Mentor & develop engineering talent
Must be a U.S. Citizen. This position may require access to systems/tools that are restricted to individuals who possess US citizenship
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of engineering experience, or an advanced degree in engineering and 5+ years of engineering experience
- Degree must be from an ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accredited school(s).
- U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
- 8+ years' experience working in the Aerospace Industry in a manufacturing environment with knowledge of aerospace turbine hardware – specifically blades and/or vanes
- Experience mentoring and developing engineering talent
- Process certification skillset (6 sigma), lean manufacturing or similar skillset
- Experience in production support role, industry 4.0, modernizing shop interaction with big data
- The ability to craft clear communication and build positive relationships with excellent interpersonal skills and cultural awareness
