Fuel Cell Senior Project Engineer - Bipolar Plate

Job Description

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Pontiac Engineering Center three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].

The Role:

General Motors is at the forefront of transitioning personal transportation. To enable this transition, we are looking for motivated and enthusiastic individuals to create our next generation stack mechanical components, primarily bipolar plates. You will need to have thorough knowledge and understanding, be creative, take initiative as well as use a high level of independent discernment with respect to bipolar plate design features and its interaction with stack components.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

Responsible for development and analysis of fuel cell stack related components- specifically bipolar plate (BPP), test hardware design and test method development. The individual will receive general direction from supervisor; but will need to exercise independent judgment and solution development.   

  • Support design and development of next generation stack mechanical components, primarily bipolar plate.

  • Plan and guide specifications aimed at developing new bipolar plate and flow field designs. Work with designers and VDDV team to execute the design of a bipolar plate meeting stack requirements.

  • Lead broader engineering teams for method development of CFD, FEA, material modeling and seal analysis for BPP, stack component design and integration, new concept proposals, design challenge /optimization, and manufacturing process.

  • Collaborate with external suppliers through SODWs to design, develop and deliver on time BPP parts to support program needs.

  • Deriving component and part design specifications based on customer and application needs that include risk mitigation measures such as DFMEA and DRBFM.

  • Coordinate and manage work timeline between multiple suppliers to deliver final product.

  • Oversee supplier relations to ensure best practices and quality for our products.

  • Development of test methods and set up of test hardware

  • Conducting a variety of testing in a lab environment

  • Present data to broader team

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or Materials Science

  • 2+ years of post-graduation experience in technical field

  • Ability to interface with FEA, CFD or other analysis team members to compare test results to analysis

  • High level of project management skills

  • Experience developing test hardware by working with designers

  • Must function well in engineering design team environment and have experience working with test engineering, and other engineering teams

  • Master of Science Degree, PhD

  • Experience with fuel cell or electrified systems

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with domestic and international business partners

  • Organized with strong attention to detail

  • Ability to create and present information to leadership, peers, customers and suppliers in a clear and concise manner
