Job Summary:
In the Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) department, we design, integrate, and optimize guidance, navigation, state estimation, and control algorithms to meet mission objectives. We support new business initiatives and help develop & execute technology roadmaps. The Flight Sciences department, within GNC, is looking for a motivated and dependable Principal Engineer to perform in the role of Aerodynamics Lead for Land and Air Defense Systems at our Tucson, AZ location.
This is an onsite role.
Responsibilities to Anticipate:
- The Aerodynamics Lead will apply knowledge of compressible aerodynamics and kinematic simulation to lead a small team of mixed skills to drive the air-breathing configuration to closure.
- You will be responsible for developing an aerodynamics model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), empirical data, and wind tunnel test data.
- You will be responsible for collaborating with contractor for production and evaluation of CFD results.
- You will be responsible for planning and executing a wind tunnel test.
- You will communicate status, accomplishments, issues, and required support to program leadership.
- You will provide direction, oversight, and mentoring to team members.
- You will collaborate across disciplines to ensure system effectiveness.
Basic Qualifications:
- Typically requires a Bachelor’s in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior Aerodynamics experience with flight vehicles.
- Experience in aerodynamic configuration development and analysis.
- Experience with at least two of the following: aerodynamic analysis, trade studies, and performance assessment; aerodynamic model development from empirical, CFD, and/or wind tunnel data sources; development of kinematic simulations to assess system behavior
- Experience coding in Matlab, C++ and/or Python
- Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with high speed airframe design and environments
- Experience working on multidisciplinary teams
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership and other engineering disciplines
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities
- Experience with mentoring and leading small teams
- Master’s or PhD Degree in an Engineering discipline, Computer Science, Math, or Physics
