We are searching for outstanding Trades Assistants to support mission critical communications systems at the Harold E Holt Naval Communication Station.

The precinct is vital to our nation’s defence and includes the Space Surveillance Telescope and C-Band Radar, part of a worldwide network of telescopes and radars that detect, track, identify and catalogue man-made objects in space.

The Trades Assistant is responsible for supporting tradespeople and assisting with maintenance of work areas and equipment. Working under direction the Trades Assistant may be responsible for the operation and provision of power generation, electrical distribution, petroleum and lubricant operations, paint & blast and general maintenance activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor individual operating equipment for correct operations.
  • Monitor and maintain the associated equipment / plant to ensure uninterrupted generation and distribution of power.
  • Assist trades staff with maintenance / repair duties including surface remediation.
  • Ensure on a regular basis (daily, weekly, monthly) all work orders are completed and entered correctly into the management system.
  • Perform, safely start and stop equipment, and bring on-line and off-line.
  • Understand and know the operating capacities and characteristics of all equipment.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Certificate II in a relevant trade-based vocation
  • Minimum of 2 years prior relevant experience required.
  • Previous experience checking and making minor adjustments to work methods to solve routine problems in current work processes and systems.
  • An understanding of quality assurance and control.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a technical / industrial environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge and experience in maintenance operations.
  • Knowledge in mechanical fitting/welding.
  • Computer literacy including the use of maintenance / asset management systems, Windows operating system, and Microsoft Office / Microsoft 365
