Job Description:

RTX has an opening in Facilities for a Facilities Engineer specializing in Asset Protection/Fire Protection Systems. The position is located at the Goleta, CA. facility.  In this role the incumbent will also have responsibility at other locations in Lompoc, CA., and Pt. Mugu, CA. 

In this role the incumbent will manage the fire protection systems to ensure that all fire alarms, fire prevention and suppression systems are at the highest state of readiness. The role includes responsibility for training facilities and security personnel on fire protection systems and operations and is responsible to meet all RTX policies and procedures, Federal, State and Local fire codes and building regulations. The role interfaces with; customers, contractors, supply chain management, project managers, account managers, maintenance, finance, environmental health & safety, security, and design engineering to complete tasks and is   responsible to support and coordinate all fire, life safety systems regulatory requests and activities for local, state, federal and other regulatory agencies.  

Primary Responsibilities

The candidate will have a subject matter expertise of Fire Protection Systems and shall:

  • Provide technical support to management teammates and trades personnel.
  • Provide system operation and response training to facilities and security personnel.
  • Be involved in system evaluations and create recommendations to senior management based on schedule, cost, applicable codes, and system research.
  • Provide team leadership based on your technical knowledge and ability to routinely develop cost effective solutions over a range of complex issues while ensuring solutions are innovative and consistent with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Perform work with minimal direction and communicate well with team members, management, security, EHSS, internal customers, bargaining unit, outside contractors, and vendors.
  • Collaborate with other departments in site activity such as emergency response, safety, incident investigation and response.
  • Be responsible for the operation, repair and maintenance of Fire Protection Infrastructure, continuous Hazardous Materials monitoring, and Specialty Fire Suppression Systems. Provides guidance, collaborates, and coordinates with outside consultants and suppliers performing work as necessary.
  • Responsible for performing frequent inspections of building fire protection infrastructure and fire extinguishers.
  • Support the Emergency Services Programs for the Santa Barbara County Corridor sites. 
  • Responsible for coordinating annual building evacuation drills with site management, employees, local fire department.
  • Manage the area control/emergency evacuation support team.
  • Responsible for implementing the building impairments/hot work permits program, which includes training, permit review and approvals, conduct spot checks on projects, and maintains documentation.
  • Manages the heated tank controls program by evaluating new equipment purchases for applicability and control requirements.
  • Manage FM Global Property Insurance Carrier annual inspections on potential risk loss due to fire and electrical infrastructure.  Oversees closure of recommendations documented on site reports.
  • Responsible for the conceptual design, detailed design contracting, installation contracting, and acceptance testing. 
  •  Responsible for the coordination and implementation of FM Global Insurance Programs and RIS specifically related to maintaining RTX fire protection programs. 

Required Skills:

  • Candidate shall have strong interpersonal and organizational skills and be capable of communicating with customers both orally and in writing.
  • Strong proficiency and field knowledge of fire alarm systems and at least one of the two following fire protection fields:
    • Fire Sprinkler Systems (wet, dry, antifreeze)
    • Specialty Suppression Systems (CO2, Halon, FM200, Wet Chemical, Dry Chemical…)
  • Experience in building infrastructure and technology.
  • Possess knowledge of and the ability to monitor and apply Federal, State, and local regulatory fire safety code/compliance requirements at RTX Santa Barbara County operations.
  • Understanding of State of California and National Building codes.
  • Understanding of NFPA codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of and ability to support EHS, OSHA VPP and other audits for the Asset Protection Program/Protocol.
  • Ability to Investigate and drive to closure reported Fire Safety concerns, incidents, and regulatory compliance deficiencies.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as required for operational needs and on-call response duties.

Desired Skills:

  • Prior experience in the development of new concepts, techniques, and standards as well as experience in developing solutions to complex problems.
  • Prior experience evaluating new capital appropriation projects and management of change documents, provide approvals to finance and project leads on behalf of Asset Protection/Fire Prevention.
  • On time closure for Audit AP related findings.
  • Project Leadership experience
  • Experience consulting with management on fire system maintenance and repair issues.
  • Solid computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Project, Outlook)
  • Working knowledge of electronic drawing systems (AutoCAD is used at this location).
  • 40 Hour Haz-Woper Training
  • CalOSHA Construction Safety and General Industry training

Required Experience and Education

  • This role typically requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in building, infrastructure, and maintenance projects and a bachelor’s degree in EE or ME or related discipline, or an advanced degree and 3 years of experience however in lieu of a degree a combination of relevant work experience in Fire Science/Fire certifications may be considered.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen. This position may require access to systems/tools/sites that are restricted to individuals who possess US citizenship

Security Clearance (if applicable):

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Hybrid: Employees who are working in Hybrid roles will work regularly both onsite and offsite.  Ratio of time working onsite will be determined in partnership with your leader.

Remote: Employees who are working in Remote roles will work primarily offsite (from home).  An employee may be expected to travel to the site location as needed. 

The salary range for this role is 75,000 USD - 161,000 USD; however, RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
