Collins Aerospace is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer, for our Advanced Systems & Integration team located in Cedar Rapids, IA (Special Mission Platform Systems Department (SMACS) within MA&H).  This organization is responsible for leading and supporting system development and integration on our Fusion IPS and EDS avionics platforms for military customers. The SMACS Department is capable of delivering ARP-4754A/DO-178B civil certified solutions.  We provide systems engineering through all phases of product development including program pursuit and capture, requirements capture and analysis, system architecture design, requirements allocation and traceability, system / subsystem integration, system verification, system validation, and life-cycle product support. 

This position is located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • We are looking for an established Systems or Software Engineering professional with a passion for engineering, a high degree of accountability and ability to thrive in an Agile team environment as a part of the program Integrated Modular Avionics Table (IMAT) Team in the SMACS department (Military Avionics & Helicopters).  This role will support as a software integrator on the Fusion IPS and EDS programs.

  • This position is for an individual with a broad range of skills and knowledge in system, software, and hardware engineering; interface protocols; and general problem solving. This may include designing interfaces among multiple subsystems to ensure the system functions as intended.  The role is highly dynamic, often requiring coordination among the various subsystem teams and rapid resolution of technical issues that arise. The individual filling the role has the opportunity to quickly become recognized as a critical resource for program execution and will gain knowledge of the complete system over time which enables them to provide input into future system/software architecture designs. 

  • Additional expectations for this role include engaging within a cross-functional team daily and coordinating regularly with engineering and project management to ensure success of the product and program. This includes leading and managing aspects of quality, cost, schedule, and scope while navigating the various team dynamics present.  

Other responsibilities and job requirements include:

  • Regular lab presence to assist systems and domain teams with software and hardware integration activities

  • System Integration Lab and Test Stand setup and troubleshooting

  • Software release process experience

  • Experience with the Collins engineering bid and pursuit process

  • Demonstrated time management skills - ability to work unsupervised, multi-task, and coordinate work

  • Succeed while leading in a team environment

  • Excellent communication (written, verbal, and interpersonal)

  • AGILE development experience including leadership roles

  • Mentorship of other more junior engineers

  • Willingness to travel (domestic and international <20%)

This position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 7:30am to 4:30pm workday, or beyond a 40 hour work week.

Qualifications/Experience Needed: 

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience.

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

  • Experience in the design and development of deliverable software (production or consumer facing)

  • Experience in project management including cost, schedule, and budget.

  • Avionics architecture experience such as CAAS, Flight2, Fusion

  • Logical Interface Design

  • System Configuration Files

    • Network Configuration Tables

    • Switch Configuration Tables

    • Virtual Machine Configuration Tables

    • System I/O Tables

  • Creation of system configuration artifacts

  • Setup and support of software development equipment

    • System Integration Facility (Lab)

    • Software Development stations 

    • General Lab support to Systems and Domain/Software teams

  • System technical performance measurement

  • Configuration table release coordination

  • Defense or Aerospace industry experience is preferred

  • DO-178B, ARP-4754A or similar certification based development experience is preferred

  • Experience with and integrating the IPC-9100 product
