This is a HYBRID position at the San Jose, CA or Anaheim, CA or Annapolis Junction, MD location.

AST is seeking a Senior Principal RFML Systems Engineer to work closely with our customers, senior management, program managers, and cross-discipline technical staff to lead and consult on various airborne RF SIGINT products and programs.  This engineer will provide systems engineering on new and existing products and develop and propose new concepts to customers utilizing artificial intelligence/machine learning techniques/approaches as applied to:

  • Real-time RF SIGINT collection systems,
  • Radio frequency analysis,
  • Signal modulation recognition and sorting, and/or
  • De-interleaving of pulses, specific emitter identification, and geolocation.

Qualifications/Experience Needed:

  • Typically requires 10+ years of relevant professional experience in the analysis, design, and testing of RF SIGINT or EW systems.
  • Typically requires 7+ years of strong research background in RFML concepts and systems.
  • RF Systems Engineering expertise in one or more relevant technologies:
  • RF/SIGINT sensors and Electronic Warfare (EW) systems
  • RF propagation, Antennas/Arrays & RF interferometry
  • Advanced signals and protocols (modern digital and/or wireless communications protocols, wideband and/or radar signals, advanced modulations, low power, spread spectrum, frequency hopping, encoded, encrypted, congested RF environment)
  • Signal survey, snapshot, detection, identification, classification, direction finding, geolocation, demodulation, collection, and real-time analysis
  • Demonstrable experience and/or expert knowledge of several machine learning techniques/approaches and/or technologies:
  • Transfer learning, domain adaption of ML systems
  • Deep learning-based radar signals analysis (characterization, association, etc)
  • Random forest algorithms, extreme gradient boosting, and deep learning for RF classification and regression problems
  • Spectrum sensing techniques (signal detection, parameter estimation, classification, RF fingerprinting/identification, anomaly detection)
  • Data set creation and augmentation for simulated or recorded data
  • Cognitive radio systems and waveform synthesis
  • Integration of ML models on edge or alternative (non-GPU) platforms
  • Application of different neural networks (CNN/RNNs/hybrid etc.,) and their performance on SWAP-constrained hardware
  • Adversarial machine learning such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs)
  • Modern machine learning frameworks and libraries (e.g. Keras, TensorFlow, PyTorch, MXNet, XGBoost)
  • Ability to travel up to 25% (typically for business and customer meetings and demonstrations)
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 8 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD TS/SCI security clearance.

Security Clearance: 

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
  • Must have or be capable of obtaining and maintaining a US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active and transferrable TS/SCI Clearance or current SSBI (or Active within the last 24 months)
  • Knowledge of advanced signal processing concepts – mathematical, theoretical, as well as developmental knowledge.
  • Experience with FPGA and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) implementation & digital beamforming
  • Experience interacting with company leadership (business and engineering), working directly with customer personnel, preparing, and performing customer demonstrations and briefings.
  • Experience in proposal preparation, cost and schedule estimation, risk and opportunity assessments and mitigations, and technical documentation related to contract deliverable items such as requirement, test plans and procedures, etc.

The salary range for this role is 123,000 USD - 259,000 USD; however, RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
