Collins Aerospace is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer who will support tooling design and fabrication of complex High Temperature Composite structures. You will have an opportunity to be part of a new team that is being established to support new cutting-edge technology for structural high temperature products. In addition, you will be leading projects that will engage with other functional groups such as Supply Chain, Operations, Quality as well as collaborating with other RTX engineering groups.

  • Position will be working onsite at our Pueblo CO facility

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support processing and characterization of carbon/carbon and ceramic/matrix composites for high temperature (> 1000°C) aircraft brake and structural hypersonic applications. 
  • Construct mechanical design drawings and CNC programs using Solidworks, NX, Solidworks-CAM or other similar CAD/CAM drawing/CNC programming computer aided design software.
  • (Hands On) Prepare and lead execution of Engineering Test Requests to support processing and characterization of carbon/carbon and ceramic matrix composite materials using Carbon R&D and production processing and test facilities.
  • Prepare draft process and materials specifications to establish and document material, process and manufacturing requirements.
  • Manage multiple R&D projects and project task activities.  Project activities include project plan development, material processing and testing, data collection and analysis, and summarizing information in comprehensive technical reports.
  • Complete technical reports including monthly status reports, Carbon Technical Notes and Carbon Engineering Reports, and prepare and present PowerPoint/oral summaries to Collins technical teams and leadership. 
  • Complete multiple tasks and activities including providing direction to technicians, and production personnel to achieve project objectives.
  • Address problems with multiple variables and unknown solutions.  Demonstrate clear, well thought out logic in proposed approaches and solutions.
  • Execute projects as a team member with limited oversight/supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and exercise creativity to develop and/or implement practical solutions and patentable materials and processes.
  • Position has no direct reports; however, position responsibilities do include capability to define support requirements, identify support resources and manage resources effectively to meet project objectives consistent with plan.
  • Communicate and present technical data to internal and external customers
  • Able to travel up to 15% domestically when circumstances permit
  • Perform other duties as required

Basic Qualifications

  • Requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and typically a minimum of 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and typically a minimum of 3 years of experience
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
  • Experience with 2D and 3D modeling software
  • Experience with composites
  • Project Management experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in mechanical, mechatronics, materials or industrial engineering
  • Software experience, including, but not limited to, Solidworks or related CAD/CAM software, and MatLab engineering data analysis software
  • Experience in manufacturing, development, and characterization of fiber-reinforced carbon/carbon, ceramic or ceramic matrix composite materials
  • Engineering experience in composite material characterization and processing including carbon fiber reinforced composites, carbon-carbon, and/or ceramic-matrix composites.
  • Experience with high temperature composite material processing equipment and processes including, textiles, composite lay-up, carbonization, CVD and CVI, resin and polymer infiltration, powder processing, melt infiltration and sintering
  • Experience leading and proposing projects (maintaining a budget, setting a schedule, reporting & costing)

The salary range for this role is 75,000 USD - 161,000 USD; however, RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
