The Materials Engineering group is the Material Development, Supplier Quality and Sustaining function that assists multiple areas of the business (e.g. Technology development, New Product Introduction, Production, Supply Change, Business Development, Customer Support, etc.) on a daily basis.  The Materials Engineering function requires unique skill sets that involve chemistry and chemical engineering having specialties or experience in polymer science, elastomers, urethanes, cements, adhesives, yarns, fabrics, surface technology and joining of metals. The unique blend of materials provides the ice protection performance that has made Goodrich Ice Protection Systems a world leader. The Materials Function is considered a core competency of the Ice Protection and Evacuation BU. The Materials function also supports REACH, RoHS, and EH&S, while creating and maintaining the intellectual property and the trade secrets of material recipes used in Ice Protection Systems.  

This role is eligible for relocation.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Formulate new materials and optimize existing materials to enhance performance of Ice Protection systems to support New Product Development efforts
  • Provide support to the Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Sustaining organizations via reformulation or by leading and/or assisting cross-functional teams with troubleshooting activities, materials selection, and process improvements.
  • Develop and execute test plans to validate material, process, and design robustness to service-life conditions.
  • Plan and facilitate transition of material supplier changes, locations and processing methods. 
  • Facilitate Design Assurance, Qualification, Materials capability, and First Article Inspection builds.
  • Summarize and document test findings in accordance with Collins Aerospace procedures.
  • Support Corporate Global Chemical Compliance initiatives, such as REACH and RoHS, by ensuring current and future materials meet or exceed regulations. Reformulate materials as needed for compliance.

  • 10 – 20%  

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Proven track record of formulation work and process development work in one or more of the following industries: rubber, adhesives, or coatings.  Rubber industry experience is preferred.
  • Proven track record of polymer, elastomer, or coating material test method development to validate application suitability and long term reliability.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD or Master’s in Chemistry.
  • 4 or more years of Industrial Experience.
  • Proven track record of utilizing Lean and Six Sigma tools (such as DOE and SPC) to drive experiments and decision-making.  Familiar with using JMP or Minitab statistical software.
  • Proven track record of using DFMEA and PFMEA in order to develop test plans, drive continuous improvement, and problem solving (RRCA).
  • Experience with using Materials Analysis techniques (e.g. Tensile testing, DMA, DSC, FTIR, SEM/EDS, TGA, Rheology, etc.) to drive formulation/materials selection work and troubleshooting of Manufacturing or Supplier Quality issues.
