Position Role Type:
Unspecified
As a global aerospace company at the forefront of technology development for aircraft electrification and electric propulsion systems the Electronics Controls and Motor Systems (ECMS) business unit is looking for a CAE/Thermal Engineer with experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Thermal Analysis.
Purpose of the Role:
The candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary project team to design, analyse and develop the thermal management of high-power Electric Motors and Motor Controllers.
The ideal candidate will have a willingness to find new solutions to problems, be able to work in a team and able to communicate at all levels.
The candidate will use a combination of hand calculations, spreadsheets, thermal and fluid analysis to support design decisions and ultimately create robust thermal designs. The candidate will support the testing of our products and use test data to validate your thermal models.
The candidate will join an expanding but small team of fellow CAE engineers, where there will be plenty of opportunities to influence and impact the analysis techniques and processes utilised by ECMS.
Role Requirements:
The candidate will be the work package owner for the thermal analysis for a given project, encompassing the full product cycle, from concept stage to development/ qualification testing and into product implementation.
The candidate may also be required to support other areas of the business that require thermal or CFD design/analysis on products outside of ECMS core product portfolio.
- Be responsible for the entire CFD and thermal analyses process from geometry creation/simplification and meshing through to post processing
- Undertake preliminary CFD and thermal analyses of motor designs with the electromechanical (EMAG) design team. Creating initial CAD/geometry for analysis from their initial EMAG design and developing a thermal management strategy
- Undertake concept and detailed CFD and thermal analyses of electric motor designs once the mechanical design has sufficiently matured. Simplify geometry from the designers, analyse and provide your thermal assessment in an iterative process
- Provide initial thermal assessments of high-power components in motor controllers
- Undertake concept and detailed CFD and thermal analyses of motor controllers (electronics cooling). Collate loss and component data from electrical engineers, simplify geometry from the designers, analyse and provide your thermal assessment in an iterative process
- Define thermal test requirements and guidelines to ensure valuable thermal test data is gathered
- Validate your CFD and thermal analyses using test data
- Operate in accordance with Collins Aerospace ECMS procedures and create the necessary supporting documentation for design reviews
- To work within an integrated product team (IPT), liaising closely with other project team members such as stress, manufacturing, sourcing and configuration with respect to new designs or design changes
- Own work packages and be responsible for reporting on their progress, ensuring satisfactory milestone compliance with agreed targets to support project needs and timescales
- Support and provide new ideas for the development of analysis techniques and processes
- Provide support to other team members in completion of their activities were required
- Look out and investigate potentially new cooling technologies which align/augment the company’s technology road map.
Skills & Experience:
We are seeking candidates who can meet a number of the following criteria:
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)
- Typically requires a minimum of 3 years of prior experience in engineering analysis. This does not have to be in aerospace or specifically within electric motors or controllers
- Knowledge and experience of fluid dynamics and heat transfer
- Experience using commercial CFD analysis methods and tools, e.g. ANSYS Fluent or Icepak, StarCCM+, etc.
- Knowledge of CFD processes and best practices
- An understanding of materials and fluids and their mechanical, thermal and fluid properties
- Experience of defining test requirements and processing test data
- Must be able to effectively communicate, formally and informally with peer group, other team members, suppliers and customers.
- Good time management, proactive with an ability to prioritise.
- Must have the ability to plan work efficiently to meet agreed monthly milestone tasks.
- Must be able to produce and deliver technical presentations to employees and customers at any level.
The following criteria would be of interest but is not a requirement:
- Experience of conjugate heat transfer analyses and/or electronics cooling
- Experience of multiphase and rotating flow analyses
- Experience of validating analyses against test data
- Familiarity of simple programming/scripting (Python, Matlab, etc.)
This position may involve access to export-controlled information and hardware where an export license would be required for compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Employment will be subject to satisfactory security checks, export license approval, and if required, completion of a non-disclosure agreement.
