Pratt & Whitney is seeking a Principal Thermal Engineer to support the Compressor Aerothermal Systems team. This team analyzes and develops the functional characteristics of non-gas-path elements of the compression systems from the fan inlet to the high compressor exit, including inlet icing, air systems, thermal response, clearance optimization, bearing integration, and efficiency optimization in a highly complex environment. Truly a systems role with deep technical skills to deploy cutting edge tools in CFD, proprietary codes, component testing in rigs, and design, execution, and analysis of full-scale engine testing. The selected candidate will be a member of an integrated product team at the part and module levels needing to prioritize and support multiple projects with contending priorities on time and on budget.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead/perform thermal, secondary air system and radial clearance analyses of the compressor, working with a multidisciplinary team, to support commercial and military engine programs.
  • Generate CFD based thermal boundary conditions and use knowledge and/or experience in conductive, convective and radiative heat transfer to create compressor rotor and casing thermal models.
  • Use 1D compressible flow modeling and CFD to analyze and design air systems.
  • Optimize air system architecture to ensure safety of flight and meet design life and performance requirements.
  • Specify engine validation test plans, review engine and rig data, and match analytical models to data.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and 8+ years of lead experience as it relates to process, people, and/or projects; experience in thermal analysis and design; and coaching/mentorship experience OR an Advanced degree in Engineering and 5+ years of lead experience as it relates to process, people, and/or projects; experience in thermal analysis and design; and coaching/mentorship experience.
