Principal Systems Test Engineer - Space Suit (Onsite)

Collins Aerospace is one of the world's largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defense products.  The Mission Systems business unit provides products and services to global government and commercial customers that enable mission success in the harshest environments of space, in the air, at sea, and on the ground.  In Space Systems, we design and manufacture Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) and Active Thermal Control Systems (ATCS) on a number of space platforms including the International Space Station, the current U.S. space suit, unmanned satellites, manned space vehicles such as the Boeing CST-100 Starliner and the Orion (part of the Artemis mission to return humans to the moon), as well as the future of Space Suit Services for space station and lunar missions.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join us as a Systems Test Engineer Lead to support the design, development, verification & validation, and operational support of ECLSS and ATCS hardware for future space applications.

Position Overview:

Systems Test Engineering programmatic lead will plan and manage the testing campaign for the Collins new Exploration Extravehicular Activity Services(xEVAS) system. 

This person will be responsible for the development and management of the test campaign schedule and resources from product development testing through flight certification of the Collins xEVAS system for NASA ISS and Lunar missions and commercial opportunities.  This person will work closely with Verification and Validation lead and Systems Test Engineering Technical Lead and will report to the System Engineering, Integration and Test manager.  We are looking for an individual with a strong leadership and technical background, strong organizational, time management, and communication skills to lead the Test campaign throughout the entire project life cycle.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the inspection, demonstration, and test verifications for the system, suit system, subsystem and components
  • Develop the Development Verification Testing (DVT) plan, Qualification Testing plan, and subsequent Acceptance Test plans to execute design verification and validation of the xEVAS system
  • Work closely with the Production Operations Manager and other partners and suppliers to coordinate in the development of test hardware, production items for testing. 
  • Manage test engineering activities to safely and effectively complete project on schedule.
  • Coordinate with the NASA customer and other external test facilities on test readiness reviews and facility booking.
  • Oversee the planning and performance of the integration of test articles.
  • Manage testing risks and opportunities.
  • Ensure the test team adapts and executes Collins procedures for test activities
  • Establish and maintain systems and procedures for testing group responsibilities and activities
  • Assist with business development activities including preparing estimates, supporting technical reviews, and providing quotations as required.
  • Work with production and test teams to review work instructions, address build and test issues, and improve manufacturability
  • Provide status updates to senior leadership and NASA customer
  • Exemplify technical excellence, and extensive knowledge for product realization process for Design Verification testing through acceptance/certification

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years experience OR In absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience is required 
  • Must be a U.S. Person/Permanent Resident “Green Card” holder

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in product development process design verification testing with a space exploration application
  • Hands-on experience and knowledge of human in the loop/human performance testing and test methods
  • Strong background with NASA flight hardware development testing and certification
  • Strong background with NASA Test readiness review process
  • Strong background with knowledge of NASA test facilities
  • Strong engineering acumen to solve practical problems
  • Extensive leadership experience on an engineering or project team
  • Ability to delegate resources and experience to meet challenging schedules
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to build positive relationships at all levels both internal and external to the organization
  • Excellent organizational / time management skills – ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast paced working environment
  • Experience with mechanical systems and design
  • Experience with designing and testing fluids / pneumatics systems
  • Proficient in MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Proficient in MS Project or similar scheduling software
  • Ability to work well both independently and within an integrated product development (IPD) team environment
  • Excellent attention to detail
