Principal Project Engineer - Space Systems (Onsite)

Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees, as they are essential to the development of our products.

Collins Aerospace Systems is one of the world’s largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defense products. Our Space Systems business unit within Collins provides life support and thermal management systems including comprehensive integrated Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) solutions for NASA, government, and commercial customers.  Our solutions enable International Space Station (ISS) missions, satellite and orbital destination platforms, and human mobility missions including current and next generation space suit programs.  Our products and integrated mission systems offerings enable Low Earth Orbit (LEO), lunar, exploratory, and deep space platforms across a wide range of programs including NASA’s Artemis Program which will establish a sustainable presence on the Moon to prepare for missions to Mars.

Collins Aerospace is seeking a Project Engineer with a strong technical background to support Engineering Integrated Project Teams (IPTs) in the Deep Space Portfolio in Space Systems. This position will take direction from the Engineering Leads in Lunar/Mars Transport Platforms, Lunar/Mars Orbital Platforms, Lunar/Mars Launch Platforms, Lunar/Mars Surface Platforms, and Universal Waste Management Systems (UWMS) Platforms. Hardware includes components for Active Thermal Control Systems (ATCS) and Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) for the Artemis missions and for the Active Thermal Control Heat Transfer System (ATCHTS) for the Gateway Lunar Space Station Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO). Engineering support includes dispositioning non-conforming material in SAP, responding to Supplier Requests for Information (SRIs), leading failure investigations to determine root cause and corrective action, managing Engineering Changes, supporting verification planning and closeout activities, and providing Engineering support during customer and supplier meetings.

Engineering Technical Support Responsibilities:

  • Lead root cause investigations and corrective actions for test anomalies, design issues, and field returns.
  • Complete Failure Closure Reports for customer submittal
  • Work with other Engineering functions as needed to disposition non-conforming hardware.
  • Work with other Engineering functions as needed to respond to Supplier Requests for Information.
  • Provide Engineering support for redesign efforts.
  • Provide Engineering support during customer and supplier meetings.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR advanced degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience OR in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience is required
  •  Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • This position is considered safety sensitive in accordance with NASA Guidelines. Candidate will be subject to drug and alcohol testing per NASA’s regulation SUBPART 1835.5 Drug-Free Workforce

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering degree
  • MA/MS in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering or MBA degree
  • Experience in the design, development, and qualification of space-qualified ECLSS, thermal management, or similarly complex electro-mechanical systems
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize both daily issues and strategize longer term projects
  • Superior interpersonal and influencing skills, including coaching and mentoring of other engineering staff
  • Strong computer skills, MS Office, Windchill
  • Natural presence/comfortable presenting to internal and external customers
  • Ability to bring team members together and work problems to resolution
  • A desire to lead with the purpose of improving IPT performance
