Principal Health and Human Performance Engineer - Space Systems (Onsite)

Position Overview:

The Health and Human Performance Engineer in the Space Industry is responsible for ensuring the physical and mental well-being of astronauts during space missions. This position focuses on designing, implementing, and evaluating systems and technologies that support the health, safety, and performance of crew members in the challenging environment of space. The Health and Human Performance Engineer collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions and optimize human performance in space exploration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement health and human performance programs:
  • Design and implement programs to monitor and improve crew members’ physical and mental health during space missions.
  • Develop protocols and procedures for medical assessments, exercise routines, nutrition plans, sleep schedules, and psychological support.
  • Conduct research to identify potential health risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  • Design and optimize life support systems:
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists to design life support systems that maintain a safe and habitable environment for crew members.
  • Develop and test technologies to recycle air, water, and waste products to ensure sustainability during long-duration space missions.
  • Evaluate and optimize life support systems to enhance crew comfort, safety, and performance.
  • Conduct research and data analysis:
  • Collect and analyze data related to crew members’ health, performance, and well-being.
  • Use statistical methods to identify trends, correlations, and potential areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with research teams to develop evidence-based strategies for enhancing crew performance and well-being.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams:
  • Work closely with engineers, scientists, medical professionals, and mission control teams to integrate health and human performance considerations into mission planning and spacecraft design.
  • Provide expertise and guidance on human factors, ergonomics, and human-machine interfaces to enhance crew safety and efficiency.
  • Participate in collaborative problem-solving and decision-making processes to address challenges related to crew health and performance.
  • Maintain compliance with regulations and standards:
  • Stay updated on relevant regulations, policies, and standards related to crew health and safety.
  • Ensure compliance with international space agency requirements and industry best practices.
  • Provide input and support for the development of guidelines and standards related to health and human performance in space exploration.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years experience OR In absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience is required 
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, human factors engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field. A master’s or Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of human physiology, psychology, and performance optimization.
  • Familiarity with space environment and its impact on human health and performance.
  • Experience in designing and implementing health and human performance programs.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and statistical methods.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations, policies, and standards in the space industry.
