Principal Electrical Project Engineer - Space Systems (Onsite)
Collins Aerospace Systems is one of the world’s largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defense products. Our Space Systems business unit within Collins provides life support and thermal management systems including comprehensive integrated Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) solutions for NASA, government, and commercial customers. Our solutions enable International Space Station (ISS) missions, satellite and orbital destination platforms, and human mobility missions including current and next generation space suit programs. Our products and integrated mission systems offerings enable Low Earth Orbit (LEO), lunar, exploratory, and deep space platforms across a wide range of programs including NASA’s Artemis Program which will establish a sustainable presence on the Moon to prepare for missions to Mars.
Collins Aerospace is seeking an Electrical Project Engineer with a strong technical background to advance Integrated Product Team efforts for the Orion Digital and Analog Motor Controllers (various) for the Orion Design, Development, Test, and Evaluation (DDT&E) program and the Orion Production Order Contract (OPOC). This position will take direction from the Program Engineering lead, Program Chief Engineer and Electrical Project Engineering lead.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Drive world class project management process using integrated scheduling, earned value management, and risk and opportunity management
- Perform Control Account Management (CAM) activities
- Work collaboratively with other Engineering disciplines (Systems, Software, Mechanical, and Electrical), Programs, Production, Quality and Supply Chain to develop an integrated execution plan to satisfy customer requirements across applicable operating conditions
- Facilitate project tasks with the various functional organizations to ensure alignment with overall project objectives.
- Track team’s integrated execution performance to plan
- Analyze, identify, and address execution problems, recommend and implement resolutions to ensure the successful completion of project(s)
- Forecast project revenues, monitor costs, and re-estimate project costs monthly to maximize project profitability and ensure business objectives are met
- Maintain and present plans and progress reports relating to business aspects of the project(s) to track progress and ensure that established targets are met.
- Ability to balance demands of multiple projects
- Work autonomously with limited oversight from manager
- Lead root cause investigations and corrective actions for field returns and production issues
- Develop bids based on customer proposal requests
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts for project execution efficiency
- Champion superior ethical and professional behavior in all situations
- Managing Engineering changes
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR advanced degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience OR in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience is required
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
Preferred Qualifications:
- BA/BS in Electrical Engineering degree
- MA/MS in Electrical Engineering or MBA degree
- Experience in the design, development, and qualification of space-qualified ECLSS, thermal management, or similarly complex electro-mechanical systems
- Exceptional organizational, analytical, written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize both daily issues and strategize longer term projects
- Superior interpersonal and influencing skills, including coaching and mentoring of other engineering staff
- Strong computer skills, MS Office, Windchill
- Natural presence/comfortable presenting to internal and external customers
- Ability to bring team members together and work problems to resolution
- A desire to lead with the purpose of improving IPT performance
