Job Summary:
The Systems Effectors: Processing, Guidance & Control Center is responsible for algorithm development including Guidance, Navigation, and Control; radio frequency (RF) and electro-optical/infrared (EO-IR) Signal Processing; and missile-and-sensor-level Modeling and Simulation for Raytheon's broad portfolio of projects, programs and products. In the GNC department, we design, integrate, and optimize guidance, navigation, state estimation, and control algorithms to meet mission objectives. We support new business initiatives and help develop & execute technology roadmaps.
The Flight Sciences department, within Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) is looking for motivated and dependable engineers with subject matter expertise in flight control system design, integration support, and performance assessment for missile systems to perform in the role of Principal Aerodynamic Design Engineer at our Tucson, AZ location.
This position is an onsite role.
Responsibilities to Anticipate:
- As a Principal Aerodynamic Design Engineer you are viewed as a subject-matter expert within Aerodynamics of air vehicles and will guide earlier career engineers and may review and delegate their work.
- You will support design, prediction, modeling and analysis of missile systems in subsonic, transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic flight regimes.
- You will use various tools to model and predict aerodynamic integrated force and moments on vehicles as well as component aero loads for structural and stability and control analysis.
- You will be responsible for maximizing the fidelity of aerodynamics modeling and analysis using data from empirical tools, CFD and wind tunnel sources.
- You may be responsible for the planning and execution of wind tunnel testing, and the creation and implementation of wind tunnel data derived models into the 6-dof performance simulation. In this capacity you will be involved in the design of flight test profiles for the verification and validation of 6-dof performance simulations.
- You will manage moderately-sized projects or processes and be expected to solve difficult and complex problems.
Basic Qualifications:
- Typically requires a Bachelor’s in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior Aerodynamics experience with flight vehicles.
- Experience in at least three of the following: vehicle design for stability and control, aerodynamic prediction, wind tunnel testing, aerodynamic model generation, trajectory simulation, running external flow CFD solution, or CFD mesh/grid generation.
- Aerodynamics experience with any of the following: subsonic, transonic, supersonic, or hypersonic air vehicles
- Experience coding in Matlab, C++ and/or Python
- The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Existing U.S. security clearance
- Experience with Metacomp Technologies’ CFD++, Pointwise, and either Fieldview or Tecplot
- Experience with Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) analysis and Large Eddy Simulation (LES)
- Knowledge of and experience with verification and validation techniques
- Experience working on multidisciplinary teams
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with senior stakeholders and other engineering disciplines
- Advanced degree in an Engineering discipline, Computer Science, Math or Physics
