DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
This position is for a Materials Characterization Test Engineer in the Materials and Processing Engineering Laboratory. This position is focused on developing & executing test programs & advanced test methods to determine properties of turbine engine materials and components. Major mechanical characterization test types include thermo-mechanical fatigue, low cycle fatigue, high cycle fatigue, fracture mechanics, creep, stress rupture, tensile, impact and tribology. As an active member of several cross-functional, problem-solving teams, this position will work closely with engineers and associates of other disciplines such as Structures, Project, Materials Development, Design, and Manufacturing.
You will be responsible for all aspects of coordination and execution of test programs to meet customer needs including specimen layout planning, extraction & fabrication, test fixture design, and procurement, post test data analysis, and formal report writing. This position requires interaction with both internal and external design and testing resources, outside universities and service suppliers, materials engineers. This position will require daily interaction, oversight and coordination of in-house testing equipment and test technicians.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop & execute test programs and strategies to define wear characteristics of turbine engine materials and components
- Coordinate specimen extraction/fabrication, test fixture design and procurement, instrumentation, post test data analysis, formal report writing and archiving of data and specimens
- Develop new testing methods and technologies to monitor material behavior in unique and challenging turbine engine environments
- Design, define & procure new test equipment and instrumentation to augment test lab capabilities
- Daily interaction, oversight and coordination of testing equipment operation, maintenance, and lab personnel
- Build effective teams by collaborating with both internal technicians and engineers as well as external customers, universities, and service suppliers
- Collaborate and work effectively on several multi-functional problem-solving teams that include engineers and associates of other disciplines including Design, Structures, Materials Development, Quality and Operations
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science Degree and minimum of 2 years of prior relevant experience.
- US Citizenship required due to government contracts
- Fluent in English (verbal/written)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering
- experience with closed loop servo-hydraulic or electromechanical testing
- Experience with characterization test types including thermo-mechanical fatigue, low cycle fatigue, high cycle fatigue, fracture mechanics, creep, stress rupture, tensile, impact and tribology
- Experience with automating data management, analysis and reporting using Python, MATLAB or equivalent
- Experience with high temperature test methods
- Experience with CAD design, structural analysis, part definition and fabrication
- A strong, hands-on mechanical background
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to develop strong interpersonal relationships and exercise influence
- Ability to lead small teams to deliver outstanding results and overcome challenges
- Knowledge and effective practice of Environmental, Health and Safety requirements
