The Mechanical Products Team (MPT), Shipboard Effectors Department, is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to work as a Section Leader in Tucson AZ.

The Section Leader is responsible for providing frontline management activities and leadership, leading mechanical systems and airframe architecture, working through a team to ensure that mechanical system requirements are met (such as environmental loading and flow down to mechanical sub-systems). Additional responsibilities include leading the design phase enabling early cycles of learning, ensuring the delivery of the Technical Data Package (TDP), influencing the integration & qualification plans, maintaining the design integrity during the production sustainment life cycle and being accountable for product cost and schedule performance.

The Section Leader role includes the technical development of people, training, performance management, hiring, and resource allocation. The candidate will ensure two-way communication with section members and serve as the day-to-day liaison to the programs concerning employee job assignments, performance, and recognition. Responsibilities also include coordinating program staffing needs and optimizing resource utilization. Daily management of Section personnel, including securing work assignments and ensuring the assignments are completed efficiently and effectively.

As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, the individual is expected to function without appreciable direction or supervision exercising considerable latitude in defining terms and conditions of deliverables in collaboration across Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, and Quality.  Candidates should possess a proven record of delivered performance through data-driven decision making, risk and opportunity management, and systems thinking to ensure delivery of a quality product.  Additionally, the candidate will promote a teaching culture in developing new talent through engagement of early career and mid-level engineers to share knowledge, lessons learned, and best practices. A strong candidate will be very familiar with the Responsible Engineering Authority (REA) role and leverage their leadership skills to drive technical execution plans.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace, Engineering Science, or other Engineering discipline
  • Eight (8) years professional experience in mechanical design and / or production support
  • Experience in missile system design and verification testing
  • Proficiency with CAD solid modeling tools and analysis tools
  • Experienced in applied Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing
  • Experienced in developing and presenting reports for Engineering Review Boards
  • Proven ability in leading technical teams and putting forth execution plans
  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Must currently have or be able to obtain a Department of Defense Secret clearance
  • Ability to access and work onsite in proprietary areas
  • U.S. Citizenship is required

Qualifications We Value:

  • Twelve (12) years professional experience in aerospace industry preferred
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or other Engineering discipline
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; both verbally and written
  • Recognized technical authority in supporting non-advocate reviews
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities from multiple sources
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute technical plans
  • Experience leading investigative teams relative to root cause and corrective action
  • Expertise in mechanical sub-systems packaging, materials, thermal, structural analysis energetics principals, control systems, interconnect, airframe, or large assembly development
  • Capable of supporting assignments both in design development and production support
  • Working knowledge of RMD processes and procedures
  • Knowledge and experience in EVMS principals

The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance prior to the start date. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
