Reporting to the Senior Supervisor of Mechanical Engineering, the Senior Mechanical Designer will be responsible to provide technical leadership to both customer development programs and our Raytheon ELCAN internal product development programs.

They will contribute and lead the team by providing mechanical functional concepts, designs, and associated documentation of optical, mechanical, optomechanical, and electronic assemblies, instruments, systems, and software stages. The Senior Mechanical Designer will be responsible to design optomechanical systems to specification requirements, detail manufacturing and assembly drawings, perform finite element analysis, conduct design reviews, and interface with manufacturing and assembly personnel to optimize the designs for size, weight, and cost. Additionally, the Senior Mechanical Designer may act as the technology lead on development projects, in which case their responsibilities will be to lead a development team by managing requirements, creating design gate review packages, and ensuring the documentation is properly configured in the PLM system.

A strong understanding of designing to tolerance, and how to apply those tolerances to the design of manufacturable parts is necessary to fulfill this position. The designer will interface with the optical design group to optimize design layouts, and the system level tolerances. In addition to design and tolerancing, the candidate will be expected to perform Finite Element Modelling and other engineering analysis tools to predict and design for the stresses and strains the product will see in various environments.

Raytheon ELCAN is a fully vertically integrated company, which will allow the candidate to get exposed to all stages in the product development lifecycle including: design, manufacturing, assembly, and test. This will thus allow for a diverse and exciting opportunity for any engineer to undertake.
 
Technical Requirements we are looking for include:

  • Must have a post-secondary degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • 4+ years of mechanical design experience, preferably in product design
    P.Eng or working towards P.Eng preferred
  • Background in physics, or experience in the field of optics is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a design from a set of written specifications
    Ability to use CAD software to design and develop products. Autodesk Inventor preferred.
  • Knowledge of FEA concepts and how to apply them using FEA software. FEMAP and NX Nastran preferred.
  • Experience in completing independent research and development activities.
  • Proficient user in Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
