Manufacturing Innovation Engineer – Mechatronics

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren three-four times per week, at minimum.

The Role

The Manufacturing Innovation Engineer – Mechatronics is an important role that will lead the design, development, and integration of the mechanical, electrical, and computer systems on our Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs).

In this role, the employee works on projects that help improve plant performance and efficiency, ranging from material movement to visual inspection and application development with cross-functional support. In addition, this individual will help search for, onboard, and support proof of concepts or pilots of new technologies.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Incorporate and test electronic and computer control systems into our prototypes.

  • Analyze and improve the efficiency, productivity, and reliability of our system components.

  • Ensure that mechatronic systems adhere to safety and quality standards.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with mechatronic systems.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate various system components.

  • Collaborate with partners, suppliers, cross-functional teams, plants, and manufacturing operations leadership to identify, onboard (as required), and evaluate technologies for replication across our manufacturing facilities.

  • Complete functional validation of prototypes in a production relevant environment (reach MRL 6).

  • Develop and document comprehensive requirements necessary to pilot new technologies in a production setting.

  • Create detailed technical specifications for new technologies and lead the Factory Acceptance tests and sign-offs.

  • Demonstrate a strong ability to understand how a technology can improve performance metrics, document the results, and effectively present findings.

  • Design pilot scenarios to validate the performance and suitability of technologies within a GM facility.

  • Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in order to continually enhance innovation efforts.

  • Identify and document system vulnerabilities and develop mitigation action plans, while effectively tracking and implementing corrective actions.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 5+ years of experience in engineering, preferably in the automotive industry.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience working with microcontrollers (Arduino/RaspberryPi) and PLCs

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and navigate through complex and uncertain situations.

  • Proven experience in design thinking, product development, process improvement, and innovation.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify opportunities and develop innovative solutions.

  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to lead and execute multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and external partners.

  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced and dynamic manufacturing environment.

  • Strong business acumen and strategic thinking abilities.

  • Continuous learning mindset and a passion for staying updated on industry trends and advancements.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)​  

  • Experience working in manufacturing, preferably in the automotive industry

  • Experience programming with C++, Python, and Matlab/Simulink

  • Knowledge in robotics (Fanuc) and ROS

  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing technologies, automation, digitalization, and Industry 4.0 concepts.

  • Master's degree
