The Collins Aerospace Product Improvement Lab provides the expertise and laboratory facilities to support the Metallurgical Evaluation, Failure Analysis Investigation, and Non-Destructive Test needs of the Burnsville, MN site. The Lab specializes in determining and documentation of the physical and chemical root cause of failure within a component, material, or process.
This position will support metallographic preparation and analysis of weld and braze joints, various material evaluations, and various in-process testing of Burnsville, MN Product. In addition, this role will support failure investigations and daily maintenance of lab equipment and lab cleanliness. The P.I. Lab is looking for a tenacious, self motivated, problem solver with a multi-disciplined background working in a hands-on manufacturing environment. Applicants will need to adapt to new laboratory requests, learn new technology and processes, and have confidence using destructive analysis tools.

Primary Responsibilities:

Prepare cross-sectioned specimens for metallurgy by abrasive cutting, mounting, polishing, chemical etching, and Imaging. This Includes working with an approved metallographic evaluator to accept or reject specimens.

Perform engineering testing and material processing Including: Tensile and Compression Testing, Crimp Testing , Heat Treatment, Plating Adhesion Evaluation, Hardness Testing, Microhardness Testing, Material Evaluations with SEM/EDX, XRF, FTIR.

Testing support for internal and external failure investigations.

Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of critical, high-cost, laboratory equipment and supplies, while working with unyielding attention to safety protocols. Maintain established laboratory cleanliness and organization.

Clear and timely communication of results through written reports, verbal interaction, and presentations. Strive for the highest quality standards with while working with all concerned parties (Engineering, Quality, Management, Executive teams).
Qualifications/Experience Needed:

Basic knowledge of MS Office programs

Operational experience of general Lab or production equipment

Typically requires AA/AS degree (or other 2-year post high school training) with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience or in the absence of a HS diploma, GED or AA/AS degree, 8 years of relevant experience is required or a Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate discipline and less than 2 years of relevant experience.

U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.
