Job Summary:
The Space Test Automation department is responsible for architecting, bidding, planning, designing, fabricating, assembly, testing, executing to budget and validating the required equipment needed for each space program. This group requires its team members to provide expertise across multiple disciplines which includes team leadership, electronics, optical, mechanical, test PCBs, test firmware, test software, simulators, shipping containers, and various types of test aids. This department also provides space Integrated Product Team Leadership (IPTL) for the STE development, and various Optical/Mechanical and Electrical development efforts. We also provide the expertise for testing payloads in a space environment, such as TVAC, EMI, thermal and vibration.
We are hands-on, designing with the latest technology and tools, and integrate state of the art test solutions with the most advanced engineering systems in the world.
The Space Test Automation department is seeking an Electronics and Electrical Technician to work in an engineering laboratory environment to product engineering Special Test Equipment (STE) hardware in accordance with customer and internal requirements, as well as industry standards. Candidate will collaborate with multi-disciplined engineering teams from multiple space programs to help create the required STE equipment racks and test configurations.
Responsibilities to Anticipate:
- Fabricating electrical hardware from drawings, schematics, 3D models, written notes and verbal instruction
- Originating and performing methods to verify, troubleshoot and analyze new hardware.
- Performing electrical layout, construction, modification, testing, adjustment, verification and prove-in of prototype electronic equipment.
- Attending electrical/mechanical engineering drawing peer reviews to provide critical input to translate engineering design specifications into producible prototypes.
- Fabricating basic circuits and harnesses to meet quick turn requirements.
- Ability to balance multiple builds, while keeping clear focus on priorities and delivery commitments.
- Able to contribute to the design, engineering, and electrical build process, offering manufacturing expertise and insight.
- Provides high quality, on-time, communication and coordination to leadership and supported customers.
- The ability to use a computer to access work instructions, perform data entry and complete on-line training is required. Also, comfortable using standard Microsoft applications.
- Provide coordination, logistic, and technical support as an individual contributor advancing departmental objectives.
Basic Qualifications:
- U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require the ability to obtain a U.S. Government Security clearance within one year of start date, if required.
- High school, secondary school, or equivalent with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in an engineering laboratory environment.
- Experience testing and fabricating electrical assemblies in three or more of the following areas: cable construction, wire harnesses routing, breakout box fabrication or STE rack fabrication.
- Experience working with a diverse engineering team in a high quality, fast paced engineering environment, supporting space related builds.
- Previous work experience reading and interpreting electrical and mechanical drawings and schematics.
- Experience in understanding chemical safety data and ability to follow safety protocols.
- Ability to work in a cleanroom environment wearing full coverall garments.
- Technician must be able to use general lab equipment like meters, power supplies, and small hand-held tools (tweezers, screw drivers, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong understanding of engineering principals and design techniques
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to use good judgement and to work independently or collaboratively in an engineering environment.
- Building Special Test Equipment (STE) rack experience for space systems is a plus.
- Experience reading and interpreting the following: electronic and electrical schematics, cable wiring and assemble diagrams, interconnect diagrams, mechanical drawings-brackets etc. and rack layout diagrams.
- Understanding of FOD and FOD reduction methods and concerns would be a big plus.
- Fabricating basic circuits and harnesses to meet quick turn requirements.
- Space Programs (preferred) and/or Airborne Programs experience
- Effective interpersonal skills to develop trust and build positive relationships with both internal and external customers.
- Ability to work with engineers to determine best practices, design for servicing, and maintainability.
- Experience analyzing and interpreting schematics and drawings to identify producibility issues.
- Associates degree in related field; OR military electronics or avionics training, OR vocational or college program certificate
- Ability to prioritize work, understanding of schedule and budgets.
- J-STD-001 Solder certification preferred and ability to solder under a microscope, typically 0402 component size type of repairs.
- Use of hand and automated tools, and experience with basic machine shop type tools and equipment.
- Experience in a cleanroom, or clean environment using typical laboratory chemical handling processes.

The salary range for this role is 38,000 USD - 86,000 USD; however, RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
