Job Description Qualifications:

A great opportunity has become available to join Boeing Defence UK team as a Data Analytics Engineer.

This position is part of the on-site C-17 Field Services Team supporting the Royal Air Force customer at Royal Air Force Brize Norton, Oxfordshire. The Boeing Team at Brize Norton is a vital part of the support that we provide the Royal Air Force Customer.  The team works directly for and with the C-17 operational Squadron, providing real-time, time critical and dynamic assistance at the point of delivery.

Role Description

We are looking to hire a CMC Data Analytics Engineer.  The Central Maintenance Computer (CMC) is an aircraft monitoring system that gathers parametric data and produces Big Data results. Through detailed analysis, this data can indicate the health of the numerous avionics and mission systems installed on the C-17.  You will be as an integral part of our Field Engineering and Technical Services Team, experts who guide the Customer on getting the very best technical performance from the C-17 fleet, the primary strategic airlifter in Royal Air Force (RAF) service.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Participating in resolving complex operational problems that require a high level of ingenuity, innovation, and coordination with the RAF customer directly through the use of CMC data analysis.
  • Utilizing CMC data to investigate and pursue courses of action necessary to safely support RAF missions.
  • Providing RAF customer and the FETS team troubleshooting and repair guidance directly sourced from the results of CMC data analytical analysis.

To do so you will be using CMC data and analytical tools, that we will train you on, and in particular you will be responsible for:

  • Analyzing and dealing with Big Data in order to identify systems and components that show early signs of failure.
  • Routine daily data analysis, trending and tracking
  • Data server management
  • Conducting near real-time data analysis to help the RAF customer identify sources of failures and providing guidance on how to resolve those failures
  • Developing algorithms to allow the data to be mined more efficiently in order to identify and prevent system and component failures
  • Providing formal engineering reports to guide the customer in failure or root cause analysis and aiding them in performing corrective maintenance corrective actions
  • Providing input into quarterly CMC program management reviews and supporting RAF requests for unique fleet/aircraft event reports
  • Providing on aircraft removal and replacement of the CMC hard drives and installing/uploading the data to CMC servers

Basic Qualifications:

  • Degree in appropriate engineering (electrical, electronic, aeronautical disciplines) . Please note that we are keen on hearing from applicants with a Computer Science degree, who are willing to be trained in the detail of aircraft systems and their operations.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • Strong background in any or all of the following areas: data analysis, Big Data management, algorithm development and programming
  • Programming experience would be ideal, in areas such as: Python, R, Java, VB, C#
  • A well-rounded understanding of binary, two’s complement, hex floating point, binary, octal, ASCII, Boolean logic, ARINC 429, and MIL-Std-1553B would also be ideal
  • Understanding of aircraft operations, maintenance, troubleshooting
  • Ability to retain composure and flexibility under pressure
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Knowledge of aircraft hydro-mechanical, propulsion, electrical, avionics and communication systems would be highly beneficial
  • Knowledge of aviation human factors and environmental controls would be beneficial

Please note that travel to other operating locations to assist with troubleshooting activity may be required. You may also have an opportunity to support other C-17 aircraft operators whose fleets are equipped with the CMC.
