Starlab - System Engineer (d/f/m) Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS)

Job Description:

A position of a System Engineer (d/f/m) has just opened within Airbus Defence and Space / Space Systems in Friedrichshafen.

The focus of the position will be on the development and design of life support systems for manned spacecraft. You will join the Chief Engineering Science & Life Support Missions department.

Our department delivers chief engineering services combined with engineering know-how and multi-disciplinary scientific knowledge in biology, medicine, physics and material science for space applications to programs and projects during proposal, planning and execution phases. The chief engineer leads the technical development - from a white piece of paper all the way over the product to disposal - of space payload systems, such as scientific experiment facilities for the International Space Station, with end-to-end responsibility for delivery of design, manufacturing, integration, verification and qualification. To the program line clusters we supply special expertise in Life Science, including Human Physiology and Biochemistry, Material Science, Fundamental and Fluid Physics, Optical and Quantum Optical Systems as well as Energy and Closed Loop Systems, especially Life Support Systems. Hereby we build the bridge from science to product solutions by applied systems engineering. 

Our chief engineers take responsibility to ensure the product’s end-to-end technical coherence, product performance over the whole life cycle, and overall compliance to quality reliability and safety standards as well as application domain specific regulations. Furthermore we steer the technical interaction between customer, multi-national industrial team and Airbus internal engineering departments.

Your tasks and responsibilities

  • Lead Systems Engineer throughout the life cycle of our development projects, which includes requirements engineering, system concept definition, interface management, system design, definition of test & qualification program, space mission preparation and operations support.

  • Selecting, proposing and finally approving the key technologies to be used in the project.

  • Perform the technical risk management. Determine the make-or-buy strategy. Drive the process to select suppliers and form the industrial team.

  • Produce the technical work breakdown structure, the development schedule and ensure that all technical teams provide on-time on-quality on-cost deliverables

  • Be responsible for the scope and quality of the assigned tasks considering all aspects like feasibility, reusability in similar products, system optimization, maintainability, safety, technical performance, interface design, risks and opportunities.

  • Ensure transfer of contracted capabilities and customer requirements into system and sub-system requirements.

  • Take responsibility in definition and automation of verification on system- and sub-system level.

  • Continuously monitor progress, ensuring timely resolution of technical issues.

  • Lead engineering change management including customer requests acceptance & rejection.

  • Take care about customer satisfaction and full compliance with valid rules and regulations.

  • Preparation of and participation in customer meetings and workshops being responsible for the technical coherence of the developed product.

  • Foster collaboration within our project team and with involved stakeholders - internal and external.

  • Book captain of the technical proposal during tenders. Represent chief engineering in the proposal team.

  • Anticipate technology needs of program roadmaps and capture suitable research & technology and research & development opportunities.

  • Actively support the continuous improvement of our team, products and processes.

Desired skills and qualifications

  • Profound knowledge of environment control and life support technologies in the fields of atmosphere management, water management and metabolic waste management

  • Experience with the development and qualification of specific ECLSS equipment over the complete life cycle from requirements engineering over system design and testing to operations support, for example:

  • Oxygen generation,

  • Carbon dioxide capture,

  • Carbon dioxide reduction,

  • Water, urine or brine treatment,

  • Sensors for trace gas measurements

  • Holistic approach to system development and design including all disciplines e.g. electrical, thermal, structural, chemical and process engineering

  • Familiar with space project phasing and development approach and related project reviews from SRR to FAR and documentation such as

  • Fast and responsive adaption of stakeholder needs in changing environment from institutional to commercial customers

  • Experience with modelling / simulation of ECLSS processes e.g. related to flow of materials, thermal analysis or loop closure considerations

  • Cooperative mind set for implementation of ECLSS into “big picture” of human spaceflight projects and coordination with other disciplines

  • Hands-on experience with ECLSS H/W (test preparation, execution and assessment)

  • Willingness to travel on a regular basis to conferences and project reviews

  • Tools:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft office environment is a MUST
  • Experience with CAD or simulation S/W is beneficial
  • Experience with Confluence is beneficial
  • Experience with requirements engineering tools such as DOORS and JAMA is beneficial
  • Experience with test tools such as LabView or FlexPro is beneficial
  • Languages:

  • English: fluency in speech and writing is a MUST
  • German and further languages are beneficial
