TRAVEL REQUIRED: This role will come with travel – typically 2-4 times per year with a 1-2 nights stay in Europe or UK.

We are looking for an established space industry engineer experienced in satellite or spacecraft design and delivery phases to join the Stevenage Spacecraft System Engineering team supporting project Chief Engineers. The team work on a variety of missions for different customers at the cutting edge of space technology, from the UK MoD to the European Space Agency including missions such as:
- Biomass - to deliver crucial information about the state of our forests and how they are changing
- FORUM - providing unique insight into Earth's radiation budget, and thus a missing piece of the climate jigsaw
- EnVision - providing a holistic view of the planet Venus from its inner core to upper atmosphere
- ExoMARS Rosalind Franklin and Argonaut - contribution to Europe's Mars and Moon Landers
HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE TEAM
- Multi project experience in spacecraft system engineering or a closely related spacecraft engineering discipline, including implementation phases, system study, technology development, design development, qualification and acceptance, and in-orbit lifecycle.
- Experience and awareness of institutional customer programme types and lifecycle models, with emphasis on European Space Agency and government customers
- Technical planning, co-ordination and leadership skills for spacecraft engineering activities in a project context – including identifying the needed analyses, development and test activities for the agreed risk control through an understanding of various model philosophy approaches.
- Technical requirements elicitation, scrutiny, and allocation including trade-offs across design for compliance, design for manufacture, and design for cost approaches
- Verification activity planning and co-ordination across engineering and test departments, including test specification and report preparation and approvals, analyses campaign scope, readiness and results approvals, preparing inputs to verification control boards and participation to these.
- Technical spacecraft resource and performance budget management including some underlying analyses, including co-ordination of inputs and analysis from discipline specialists.
- Review and approval of discipline-oriented or supplier/subcontractor delivered inputs. Writing of technical proposals, design reports and justifications. Contribute to and support co-ordination of both rough-order-of-magnitude and committing cost proposals for engineering scope
ABOUT YOU
- Excellent technical and programmatic communication skills (listening and delivering) to/from customer representatives, and internal project management, procurement, project financial control, assembly integration and test departments.
- Able to simplify and explain as appropriate to the audience.
- Proficient in collaborative working methods both physically and with remote teams, whether Windows/MS or Google Workspace environments, and familiar with industry standard toolings such as IBM Rational DOORS, commercial PLM/PDM such as Windchill, and Matlab. Familiarity with UML or SysML may be an advantage.
- Commitment to become familiar with and follow export control regulations and security controls as needed for the domain of activity assigned
- Flexibility to adapt to workload profiling and mult-task across workpackages or projects as needed
Although you will have no direct reports / people management, there is a strong requirement to be able to co-ordinate project teams and to facilitate relationships between departments and projects teams; as such good communication skills is a must.
