Location: Friedrichshafen
-
Start: Spring 2024
-
Duration: 6 months
Thesis Title:
Optimization of Tracking Algorithms for Space-Based Detection of Hypersonic Flight Vehicles
Thesis Description:
Future satellite missions are currently investigated which use optical measurements for a real-time trajectory estimation of space objects. Possible applications are the observation of launchers, meteors and re-entry vehicles. The focus of this thesis will be on hypersonic flight vehicles flying in the endo- and exo-atmospheric region. An initial simulation environment for performance engineering of such a satellite-based an observation mission is already established. The goal of this work will be an extension and optimization of the utilized data filtering and estimation algorithms within the simulation.
Your location
At the Airbus site in Friedrichshafen you will be working on innovation where others spend their holidays. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Constance while having lunch in our canteen. And after work, join one of our many corporate sports groups to go running, sailing or skiing.
Your benefits
-
Attractive salary and work-life balance with an 35-hour week (flexitime).
-
International environment with the opportunity to network globally.
-
Work with modern/diversified technologies.
-
At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.
-
Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.
Your tasks and responsibilities
-
Gain an insight into the field of space-based target detection and tracking and corresponding in-house simulation software
-
Gain an insight into hypersonic flight vehicles and corresponding aero-thermodynamics with reference to trajectories and radiated signatures
-
Set-up of challenging observation scenarios for space-based sensors (consider variations of aerodynamic and time-dependent observational parameters)
-
Adapt the available simulation environment to process the defined scenarios (implement and test the new or adapted algorithms in Fortran/MATLAB)
-
Simulate and analyse the expected performance of space-based sensor systems
-
Potentially implement simulation features into GUI routines (Java)
-
Document the results
Desired skills and qualifications
-
Enrolled student within aerospace engineering, software engineering, computer science, physics or comparable
-
Good knowledge and experience in coding in Fortran 95+ and/or MATLAB
-
Good knowledge in numerical methods and orbital dynamics as well as data filtering algorithms (e.g. Kalman Filtering) and aero-thermodynamics
-
Willingness to work independently, high level of motivation for learning and improvement of skills, personal initiative and the ability for efficient timing
-
Team spirit and willingness to co-operate and working together in an international company
-
Fluent English and/or German
-
Experience in coding in Java, especially in the development of GUI's with Java
-
(FXML) would be a plus
