AALTO HAPS LTD. Software Engineer Graphics and Simulation

We are looking for a Software Engineer Graphics and Simulation to join Airbus in Farnborough. You will report to the Software Team Lead, where you will be part of a software team continuing development and maintenance of Zephyr Ground Control Software.

Zephyr is an ultra-light weight, solar electric aircraft, which is able to fly persistently, day and night in the stratosphere, for months at a time.  The current single tail variant (Zephyr S) completed its successful maiden flight during Engineering Flight Trials (EFT) in Arizona USA in July and August 2018, achieving an endurance of 25 days, 23 hours and 57 minutes.  It continues to pursue and break world records.

The successful candidate will be responsible for working within a team environment and assisting with delivering all stages of the design and development of the ground control software, from identifying requirements, through design, programming, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.  

There will be a particular technical emphasis on the ground station software, where an intermediate or junior software engineer with graphics (HMI) experience on Windows, Linux and other RTOS is required.

Tasks & Accountabilities

  • Assist the Team Leader with respect to concept and design of new graphical systems, including simulation systems.

  • Assist the Graphics Ground Station team leader, learning the current system and assist with maintenance opportunities for the current Zephyr flight program.

  • Be part of the new ground station software concept with graphical modelling and interface definition. This will be a learning phase with DO-278 training provided for the right candidate, who is willing to learn and be a full part of the team.

  • The new ground station concept shall require requirement, and design work to ensure that graphical systems are ready for the next generation aircraft program.

  • Ensure software meets requirements, comply with coding standards and unit test code modules using available test tools to determine static analysis of code implemented.

  • Production of documentation: including design documents, user manuals and operator training materials.

Skills & Experience

We appreciate that not everyone will have all the skills/experience listed below, and would welcome applications even if you do not meet all the requirements.

  • Experience working with software development teams through the software development lifecycle. (SDLC)

  • HMI application development. Model driven VAPS or SCADE Display and other graphical modelling tools such as QT.

  • HMI application development. Model driven VAPS or SCADE Display.

  • PC application development using Windows and other RTOS.

  • Requirements, design and software process documentation.

  • Experience working with software development teams through the software development lifecycle. (SDLC)

  • PC application development using Windows and other RTOS. 

  • Knowledge of OpenGL, Vulkan or Windows GDI would be useful.

Other Useful skills and experience:

  • Experience in aviation, particularly ground control systems would be an advantage.

  • MISRA C or C++ Coding standard

  • Experience applying RTCA DO-178, DO-278, DefStan55 experience useful#, but not necessary, as training will be provided.

  • Doors experience, UML would be useful, training will be provided
