Role Summary

Fundamental to this role is being able to Competently set and operate CNC lathes. The machinist will be required to work to tight tolerances and be able to check work/parts produced meet the required standard. You must be able to work on your own initiative and understand all aspects of the manufacturing process. The ideal candidate will have operated in an aerospace machining environment for an extensive period of time and having gained this experience in what it takes to produce quality parts on time and is able to transfer that experience and expertise into the Boeing Sheffield Facility.

Core Responsibilities

  • Set-up / changeover and / or operate a range of CNC lathes, Millturn, Milling machining centres by installing and adjusting work holding, tooling and tool wear offsets.
  • Efficiently and productively load and safely operate a range of CNC machines ensuring that down time is minimized.
  • Able to run multiple machines / set-ups (multi task).
  • Recognize, deploy, and properly use inserts, work holding, and tooling.
  • Efficient identification of production process tool wear and the timely adjustment, replacement of worn, broken or damaged cutting tools.
  • Verify programs and settings using a range of measuring / inspection equipment and apply appropriate adjustments to ensure that component quality is maintained.
  • Provide timely feedback to the Line Manager on issues and any recommendations for process and/or quality improvement.
  • Routinely electronically register and record all process operations on all machine tools being used and maintain results daily.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement activities within the machining section.
  • Ensure that daily / weekly / monthly maintenance tasks are carried out as required.
  • Maintain a high level of housekeeping.
  • Adhere to company procedure at all times.
  • To support with any other ad-hoc tasks where required.
  • To carry out any other reasonable tasks as may be requested from time to time to support the business within the various production areas, manufacturing facilities or elsewhere as may be required.
  • To take a responsible and proactive approach to health, safety, and environmental risks in relation to your own role and to control the risks or report them to the management team as appropriate.
  • Train and mentor other machinists / apprentices on site.
  • The ability to work an alternating shift pattern: Mornings: 6:00am - 14:00pm, Afternoons = 13:45pm – 22:15pm (Mon – Thurs) 13:45pm – 19:15pm (Friday)

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Fully skilled, time-served engineer with Significant experience of setting and operating multi-axis and/or twin spindle CNC machine tools.
  • A strong working knowledge of cutting tool setting and applications and competent with the use of complex fixtures. Familiar with Siemens 840D control preferred but not essential.
  • Used to working to tight tolerances in a wide range of materials.
  • Able to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Able to troubleshoot machining processes and work under own initiative.
  • Able to train and mentor others.
  • Comfortable working within an ISO 9001 controlled environment.
  • Experience of working in a dynamic sub-contract machining environment.
  • FLT license desirable.
  • Ability to reduce setup time and machining through process improvements.
  • Understands and can perform work shift and tool wear compensation / offsets.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations. (Ability to apply concepts such as trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations).
  • Perform daily and regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks on machinery.
  • Communicates honestly, professionally, and respectfully with others and demonstrates effective listening skills.
  • Experience of Aerospace machining and AS9100 requirements is desirable, other highly regulated industries will also be considered (medical, nuclear, automotive etc).
  • Good level of numeracy and literacy
  • Good level of IT skills
