Background
In the automotive industry, the time to market has been significantly reduced in recent years. Simulation-based design processes play a vital role in reducing the product development cycle time. In the early concept development stage, it is important to have effective methods and tools for faster evaluation of different concepts. Traditional CAE evaluation which is used in the later stages of product development are often too time and resource consuming to be used in the concept stage and complete body- in-white models are often missing.
Scope
The main scope of this thesis is to investigate the needs of the body-in-white concept development process with the goal to help the design engineer create better concepts with a good balance between attribute performance & weight/cost. To support this goal there is a need to explore and study the methods and tools available, both inhouse and outside Volvo cars, and to further develop the existing inhouse structural concept evaluation tool with more added features/load cases and to make it more efficient.
