Sr Data Engineer

Job Description:The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for planning and implementation of components within the Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) enterprise data platform and other data systems. The Senior Data Engineer aligns with the Enterprise Data Architect to ensure that Data Integration team members deliver uniform results providing a consistent and supportable view of data across the entire Enterprise. The Senior Data Engineer ensures that data solutions are designed to advance MNAO’s quest for continuous improvement to manage data and deliver analytic capability to the enterprise. Lastly, this role is responsible for design, development, and delivery of data and BI platforms supporting MNAO enterprise analytics.

Major Areas of Responsibility (MAR):

Enterprise Data Delivery and Oversight - 50%

  • Ensure data integration methods follow defined standards.
  • Ensure all data content is developed by Data Engineering and Integration team and implemented in accordance with the development lifecycle.
  • Ensure data processes are designed to minimize layers of staging and potential duplication of data or variations in taxonomy or business rules.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all testing is completed and well documented to ensure the highest level of quality within MNAO data systems, including Unit, Integration, Functional/Performance, Acceptance and Regression testing.   
  • Ensure that data integrations are implemented and managed using best practices. Ensures timeliness, consistency, accuracy, and quality of content along with optimal query performance.
  • Responsible for ensuring proper automation of all data integrations in Production and that all integrations utilize MNAO’s process logging methodology.
  • Ensures 100% compliance with MNAO security requirements for data.

Planning and Execution - 20%

  • Help to develop and communicate standards.
  • Confirm that all deliverables from the Data team are consistent and follow departmental standards.
  • Provide cross training amongst team members.
  • Support Delivery teams with project planning including recommended solutions, analysis of benefit, cost, work schedule and any related risks or dependencies.
  • Provide updates as required to project management and proactively identifies suggested improvements.
  • Ensure that data accessed by analytic tools is properly modeled using star schemas which utilize consistently defined fact and dimensions tables. 
  • Support BI analysts in gathering of business requirements to properly design solutions benefitting MNAO business users need for advanced analytic capability.  
  • Evaluate source system data as needed, confirms that data content and quality available supports requirements for content to be developed in the EDW.
  • Collaborate with cross functional and internal teams to deliver data platform content supporting MNAO BI requirements.

Data Governance / Data Stewardship - 15%

  • Act as data platform SME supporting business management making data governance decisions.
  • Define and communicates records of reference and appropriate source systems for data integrations.
  • Ensure that all application systems leveraging the data platform content are properly integrated regarding architectural and source requirements.
  • Closely align with team supporting analytic interfaces to data and proactively identifies improvements. 
  • Interface with internal application teams and external data providers to ensure that systems and processes sourcing data from or providing data to the data platform are properly designed and implemented in accordance with MNAO defined policies.

Documentation - 15%

  • Ensure that Data Engineering and Data integration team members deliver consistent documentation of work product. 
  • Ensure that documentation and knowledge transfer to Operations Support team members is 100% complete prior to transition to steady state support.
  • Responsible for accurate and complete documentation during all project phases, including project plan creation and maintenance.
  • Documentation of data transformations and data lineage.

Qualifications and Other Requirements:

Education (Minimum):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or IT-related field, or equivalent combination of education, training and work experience.

Experience: 

  • Minimum seven (7) years’ experience working with data stores, relational databases, lake houses, and data warehouses.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in active ETL or data pipelines development.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience delivering data platform, on-prem and cloud, solutions in support of enterprise Business Intelligence initiatives. 
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience working directly with Industry Leading Enterprise Business Intelligence Platforms with experience defining requirements for and delivering semantic model content.
  • Experience implementing cloud data platform solutions, data landing zones, data integrations supporting cloud-based solutions and expanding upon data store solutions.
  • Experience delivering data services from an enterprise data hub to downstream applications.
  • Experience working with senior stakeholders and non-technical business leaders.

Proven track record in the following:

  • Ability to produce timely deliverables and manage multiple and shifting priorities in a dynamic environment with sound judgment and clear reasoning.
  • Working across application development groups and with business stakeholders.

Training/Certification (preferred, but not required):

  • Azure Data Engineer Associate, Fabric Analytics Engineer, Oracle RDBMS, Data Integration Platforms (ODI), Enterprise Business Intelligence (OBIEE), Data Search / Discovery and Visualization, HDFS, Dimensional Data Modeling, Data Engineering, Data Warehousing

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Senior technical capability with demonstrated experience implementing cloud based solutions supporting structured and unstructured data with global data and user interaction.
  • Advanced knowledge of current and emerging hardware and software technologies and uses in support of department initiatives.
  • Ability to create and interpret Enterprise Relationship Diagrams.
  • Strong knowledge of Industry Leading data solutions including Oracle Relational Database, Big Data technologies, Restful Web Services and Data integration tools with expert knowledge in at least one enterprise level product.
  • Strong Oracle and Microsoft relational database, SQL and OLAP skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Information Technology department employees and customer representatives.
  • Must have advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, Visio, Project) and internet software.
  • Ability to independently organize work processes, set priorities and make decisions on advanced assignments.
  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others, and independently, to resolve complex issues with innovative solutions.
  • Critical thinking, attention to details, accuracy and data integrity is required.
  • Well-balanced interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communications skills are required.
  • Ability to communicate professionally at all levels within and outside of the organization.
  • Adaptability to work effectively in a team environment and in a professional manner among colleagues, clients, and vendors.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision and/or direction.
  • Must be accountable and take direction from supervisor, follow work rules, and keep required work schedules, which include regular and predictable job attendance.
  • Duties may require 24 hours, seven days per week on-call responsibility for project support or for escalated support issues.

Travel:

May be required 1 – 2 times per year

    Pay Range:

    $104,200.00-$158,950.00

    Salary to be determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
