Senior Subsystem Lead Engineer (SSLE) – Thermal Cabin Controls and Diagnostics

Workplace Status:

Hybrid - This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their primary location (Warren Tech Center or Milford Proving Ground) three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Team:

Vehicle Mechatronics Embedded Controls (VMEC) is responsible for designing, developing, and deploying the embedded controls and software for all vehicle systems and components that manage cabin comfort.  

The successful candidate will join Cabin Thermal ART, responsible for developing HVAC Climate Controls for all GM vehicles produced globally!  The Subsystem Lead Engineer is an Individual contributor with recognized expertise responsible for tasks and work throughout the entire vehicle development lifecycle including requirements definition, systems design and implementation, testing, and problem resolution.

The Role:

General Motors Global Electrification, Controls, Software and Electronics organization is focused on a world with Zero crashes, Zero emissions and Zero congestion. In an embrace of Agile practices and system engineering principles, we develop some of the most advanced and awesome mobility features. This innovative role within the Body/HVAC/Passive Safety Electronics & Controls team will support new technology development applicable to aspects of autonomous, electric and traditional internal combustion applications. Agile, System Engineering, requirements development, thermodynamics, and controls integration knowledge are definite plus. The drive and tenacity to grow technically and professionally while working some of the most recognized features in General Motors is a must!
 

Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain subsystem/component technical specifications in IBM DOORS and/or IBM Rational Synergy software for Thermal Cabin Controls and Diagnostics Systems.

  • Provide guidance and input for feature design verification plans by working with Feature Owners and Validation Engineers.

  • Create and maintain mechanization drawings with the assistance of the Architecture group.

  • Maintain open requirements issue list and review, track, and report on progress and status.

  • Review and update the Electrical and Thermal subsystem technical specification document for applicable subsystems.

  • Create and manage change requests to update requirements and specifications of subsystems using IBM Rational Team Concert (RTC) tool.

  • Work with Software Engineers to review software models to ensure compliance to the requirements.

  • Involved in subsystem related issue root cause analysis, whether in vehicles or in electrical and thermal benches.

  • Work with global technical teams to perform subsystem level testing and defect reports.

  • Review Owner’s Manual and Service Information related to the applicable subsystem.

  • Implement new feature/functions related to the applicable subsystem.

  • Scheduling meetings to formulate solutions to issues and translate solutions into requirements.

  • Involved in bench and vehicle verification and validation testing for applicable subsystems.

  • Performing subsystem level DFMEAs and collaborating in System and Component DFMEAs.

  • Use Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) Integration Tool (FIT) for managing FMEA processes across applicable subsystems.

  • Assessing JDP and Compass reviews and providing appropriate feedback.

  • Support advanced technical work projects that drive future features and vehicle enhancements.

Additional Job Description

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following areas: Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Mechanical Engineering

  • 5+ years experience in applying microprocessor based controllers to automotive vehicle electrical and thermal systems

  • 5+ years of demonstrated Technical knowledge and ability in relevant engineering disciplines (eg. Software, Thermal Dynamics, Control Theory)

  • Knowledge of microcontroller architectures, memory technologies, and programming

  • Strong understanding of major automotive subsystems

  • Knowledge of vehicle serial data communications (CAN, GMLAN, LIN)

  • Knowledge of embedded controller systems electrical circuits

  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing and comprehending software/hardware requirements

  • High level knowledge of software verification/validation processes

  • Experience with and/or knowledge of relevant technologies (eg.  CyberSecurity, FlexRay, AUTOSAR, Hybrid Controls, Ethernet)

  • Experience or knowledge of relevant tools ( e.g. Matlab, Simulink, Rhapsody)

  • High degree of Program Management skills

  • High level of interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with others

  • High level of oral and written communication skills

  • Results driven individual with high levels of initiative and pro-activity

  • Experience in the automotive product release and specification process

  • Excellent problem solving skills involving complex systems

  • Ability to work with highly technical people and drive them to reach a common goal

  • Experience using technical requirements software such as IBM DOORS

  • Experience using change control management software such as Rational Team Concert

  • Experience using software configuration management tools such as IBM Rational Synergy

  • Experienced in performing system and component level DFMEAs (preferred).

  • Experienced using DFSS

  • Experience working with diagnostic tools such as Vehicle Spy, CANoe, CANalyzer, NeoVI
