Safety Representative

Job Description

On-site: This position requires an employee to be on-site on a full-time basis.

The Role

The Site Safety Representative supports the St. Catharine's GPS  in their implementation and maintenance of the Workplace Safety Management System and Site Health and Safety related goals. The Safety Representative provides leadership with consultation, education, and tools to be effective in problem
solving, injury reduction and culture development initiatives. This includes ensuring regulatory requirements and GM requirements are communicated, understood, implemented, and assessed at the site as required.

Working effectively with union representatives to jointly resolve site related issues is a key aspect of this position. As a contact for Health and Safety regulatory agencies, the role requires the incumbent to lead resolution of government safety violations or citations.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Providing Workplace Safety & Industrial Hygiene technical and regulatory advice to site personnel

  • Assisting site Leadership to maintain compliance with all Health and Safety regulatory requirements

  • Lead, participate and support site committees such as JHSC, Incident Reduction Committee, Ergonomics Committee, Safety Stars, Noise, etc.

  • Analyzing Workplace Safety data and communicating results and trends along with continuous improvement opportunities

  • Participating the successful development and execution of the annual Workplace Safety BPD action plans at the site

  • Developing partnerships with key site personnel including site Leadership and Unifor partners

  • Develop and conduct Workplace Safety training for new and current employees

  • Conduct safety audits, hazard assessments through task analysis, risk assessments and workplace inspections and recommend corrective actions

  • Assist in the investigation of incidents, injuries, and work refusals

  • Lead/ Support new and modified equipment review and buyoff processes

Additional Job Description

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, 2 + years experience in a full time Workplace Safety, Ergonomics, or Industrial Hygiene position

  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act of Ontario

  • Demonstrate high level of initiative and interpersonal skills to work effectively with others

  • Ability to take initiative and work on multiple assignment at one time with proven project and time management skills

  • Demonstrate analytical ability to work independently, investigate and to apply technical judgment and resolve safety problems

  • Ability to lead, motivate and influence others to achieve Safety and Industrial Hygiene objectives

  • Ability to interface effectively with other departments, staffs, suppliers, and regulatory agencies

  • Participate the sites Joint Health and Safety Process

  • Knowledge of Computer Software & Systems (Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, TKS)

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)  

  • An associate degree or equivalent in an occupational safety subject such as Safety Management, Occupational Safety, Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene etc. with 5 years experience in a full time Safety and Industrial Hygiene position

  • Individuals with recognized safety certification, such as: Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional CSP)

  • Previous manufacturing/supervisory experience

  • Knowledge of Health and Safety Management System

  • Knowledge in GM’s Global Manufacturing System

  • JHSC Certification
