Job Description Qualifications:

Spectrolab, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, seeks a Product Engineer to participate in the development of new Illumination and Solar Panel/Array products and to work closely with a cross-functional team to generate manufacturing documentation and ensure customer requirements are met on-time and within budget.  This position will regularly interface with internal and external customers and suppliers.  

Spectrolab is the world’s leading merchant supplier of the highest efficiency multijunction solar cells for spacecraft power systems, with proven reliability drawn from 65 years of space heritage.  Spectrolab’s state-of-the-art space solar cells and panels power satellites in Earth’s orbit, as well as the International

Space Station.  Since its founding in 1956, Spectrolab has led the way in the development of high efficiency solar cells for space missions.  During the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, a Spectrolab product became the first solar panel to be placed on the moon.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Participate in new product development and obsolescence recovery efforts.
  • Translate customer and product requirements into documentation for parts and materials procurement, product manufacturing, and testing.  
  • Perform mechanical, electrical, reliability, FMEA, EMC, and DFMAT analyses to optimize new product designs within the confines of schedule and cost objectives.
  • Prepare product design review documents and design analysis reports.  Make effective presentations to internal and external customers.
  • Qualify new products and write qualification reports.
  • Generate and review manufacturing documents for assigned programs and products.  Support manufacturing for correct implementation of the design.
  • Work with CAD design team to generate and update part and assembly documentation needed for procurement, manufacturing, and assembly.
  • Identify long lead materials, tooling, and testing requirements for the product.
  • Generate product Bill of Materials (BOM).
  • Interact with suppliers and peer groups within Spectrolab for accurate and timely realization of the product. 
  • Perform the necessary analyses and heritage assessments. 
  • Develop test plans as needed to verify design conformance to requirements.
  • Work with manufacturing, planning, procurement, and suppliers to assess planning and production issues as they emerge.  Provide clear and concise decisions and dispositions.
  • Provide technical support to purchasing, marketing, and customers.
  • Perform product non-conformance and failure analysis; identify and lead implementation of appropriate corrective actions and hardware dispositions.  
  • Assess product and process performance and identify opportunities for continuous improvement in product, cost, schedule, and market capture performance.

This position is expected to be fully onsite in Sylmar, CA.

This position must meet export control compliance requirements. To meet export control compliance requirements, a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.15 is required. “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • 1+ years of experience communicating with customer representatives in a variety of forums, both written and spoken, regarding technical subjects.
  • 1+ years of experience reading and interpreting drawings, specifications, material processes, schematics, and diagrams.
  • 1+ years of experience supporting production in a manufacturing environment.
  • Willingness and ability to work outside of standard business hours (evenings, weekends, and holidays).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Hands-on experience in building, wiring, and troubleshooting electro-mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience with environmental (thermal, UV, radiation, etc.) analyses and testing.
  • Working knowledge of basic GD&T principles and ability to generate 2D and 3D CAD models and drawings using AutoCAD/Inventor Pro Suite 11 (or higher).
  • Familiarity with complex gimbaled systems, FAA safety of flight-testing requirements, high voltage illuminations, or electro-mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis techniques and basic thermal analysis, preferably using Inventor Pro Suite Analysis package including definition of model, mesh, and boundary conditions and interpretation/presentation of the results.
  • PCB design experience, inclusive of logic circuits and programming.
  • Experience in programming with VBA; LabView; C, C+, or C++; SQL.
  • Familiarity with 3D models and drawings in Autodesk Vault.

Typical Education & Experience:

Associate (level 2):  Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Mid-Level (level 3):  Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

This position is for 1st shift 9/80 schedule with after hours on call production support for products you own.

Summary pay range:

Associate (level 2):  85,850 – 116,150

Mid-Level (level 3):  104,550 – 141,450
